MySpace has finally launched in the world’s most populated nation, providing over 1 billion Chinese citizens with a social networking service to call their very own. There are a number of shocking differences in the Chinese version of the web service, ones that might discourage the type of over-the-top expression that’s prevalent on the American version. Most notable is that Chinese users are asked to report "misconduct" from other users by clicking a button. Sounds pretty benign, right? It turns out that "misconduct" is defined as "endangering national security, leaking state secrets, subverting the government, undermining national unity, spreading rumors or disturbing the social order." Whoa! Any reference to banned groups and/or ideas is also considered to violate the terms of service, including support of the Dalia Llama and Taiwanese Independence.
