The Playstation 3 grows up

An "anonymous source" from Sony is claiming that the Playstation 3 is set to undergo a major redesign in an attempt to create a more media friendly console. It sounds like the core feature set of the Playstation will remain untouched, with the current cell processor staying put. The big changes will include an alteration to the Blu-ray drive loading mechanism, and a number of other cosmetic differences that will enable the unit to sit more comfortably within a typical media center. There will also be software enhancements that will allow the new PS3 to output to sources other than standard HDTVs. The source stated that the new device should surface within the next 18 months. Has the maturation of the Playstation begun? Seeing as this comes from an unverifiable source, we’ll simply have to wait and see.
