Hurricane season is fast approaching. The giant storms have the potential to create massive destruction in their wake, with cell phone lines being just one potential casualty. Having learned from past mistakes, Sprint is making preparation for the upcoming storm season. The company is pumping $115 million into a network reinforcement project on the Gulf Coast. Upgrades will include permanent generators for high risk sites and a number of Cell Sites on Wheels. COWS are essentially mobile cell towers that in times of need, can form a line of temporary service by piggybacking on one another from the a site of existing service to an affected area. High Risk Sites have been identified as public safety organizations, state and local emergency centers, hospitals, nursing homes, and other points of critical necessity. While these improvements won’t necessarily allow you to check the scores of the Yankee’s game during a massive hurricane, they should help to allow emergency services to function more effectively.
