New York cops toughen up, buy Segways

Nothing says "Respect!" like a Segway. Seriously. It’s a scientific fact. New York’s finest are apparently in need of some additional street cred, as the department has just acquired 10 of the little 2-wheeled buggers. The NYPD plans to use them in city parks and public boardwalks, as opposed to deploying them in the gang unit as originally suggested, and is currently training 25 uniformed members to operate them. Touting the benefits of Segway-bound cops as being "mobile" and "visibile," they appear to be banking on the fact that most hardened criminals will collapse in a fit of laughter when approached by a helmet clad copper on a Segway, thus rendering them unable to escape. On the flipside, it’s nice to see a large institution willing to adopt an emergent technology. Seriously…there is a bright side. Just, you up for some Segway hijackin’ on the mean streets on NYC?
