OLED displays have been heralded as the second coming of the display Messiah. They’re bright, small, and don’t consume too much power, which is an exciting combination in todays world of increasingly small, power hungry devices. Samsung’s new 2.2" active matrix OLED screen is a marvel even by modern standards. The screen itself is only .53 Millimeters thick. Yowza! This is, without a doubt, the thinnest OLED display ever. Samsung plans to push these babies to high end gizmo and mobile phone companies, as they will be unattainable for all but the highest end gagdets. The manufacturing process for these ultra thin screens doesn’t provide a high enough yield, i.e. 6 out of every 10 displays has an insurmountable physical defect, meaning not enough to make them a viable option for consumer grade products…At least not yet. Here’s to hoping that these things manage to trickle down to the average consumer.
