Despite its market dominance, MapQuest has lagged behind competitors like Google Maps and MSN Maps in terms of features and services. In an attempt to gain some lost ground, MapQuest has unveiled a brand new beta version of their popular mapping software. The new version is built on an AJAX foundation, sporting all sorts of Web 2.0 compatibility. The interface is pretty slick and provides a user experience on par with our current favorite, Google Maps. There are also a couple of nice little additions, including a recent / saved search dialog box, expanding sidebars, and much more. All in all, it’s a welcome upgrade to an aging service, though we can’t say we didn’t miss Google’s satellite  / street view options.
