Google talks Google Phone / Android with T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola

What we initially heard is quite different from what’s being announced now. We’re about to jump on the press conference call being held at noon to gather all the details, so this will be updated, but as of now:

• The "Google" phone is not one device, rather a broad "Open-Handset-Alliance" with over 34 manufacturers and mobile operators.
• The core software stack is completely open so carriers and manufacturers can customize and create unique pieces of software.
• The initial early SDK will be released next week to developers.
• The first actual phone shipping Google’s Android platform will not be seen until around the middle of 2008 and HTC has committed to doing so by that time frame.
• Android is hoped to speed up development and the release of new handsets, while also making them much more affordable to the consumer.
