AMD Opteron 4000 & 6000: 12 cores, 1 chip

Last week, we reported on several chip set announcements — of the 6-core variety — from both Intel and AMD. Today, just one day before an Intel press event, AMD has released details about its new 12-core server processing chip, the AMD Opteron 4000 and 6000. The 4000 series chip will target the low-end, energy-conscious market, while the 6000 series is for those who don’t look at the electric bill and need as much high-end horsepower as possible. AMD is touting that the new 12-core processors are more than twice as fast as the previous line of 6-core chips and, “will beat Intel’s [chips] in processing performance and energy efficiency, as well as cost per computing power.” Intel’s announcement is tomorrow… let the processor wars continue.
