BlackBerry Bold 9790 launch causes mayhem, 90 injured in Indonesia [video]

A 50% discount on the just-launched BlackBerry Bold 9790 had mall shoppers in a frenzy in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday. Reportedly, as many as 90 people were injured after shoppers fell out of line and into a disorderly crowd when word came out that the retailer selling the device wouldn’t have enough units to satisfy demand. Three people needed to be hospitalized for broken bones and more than 200 police officers and mall security officials were required to restore peace. According to The Jakarta Globa, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 typically retails for Rp 4.6 million in Indonesia ($520) and BlackBerry is the top brand in the region; four of the top five selling smartphones in the Indonesia right now are BlackBerry devices.
