So, new iPods are probably coming soon, and they could be announced at Apple’s (AAPLSeptember 12th iPhone 5 event next week. What will the new iPod touch and iPod nano look like? MacRumors published images of leaked cases that are purported to be for the new iPod nano and iPod touch. As the images show, the new iPod nano looks to ditch the small clip-on design for a look that more closely resembles the second-generation aluminum iPod nano. Observant readers will notice that the case shows cut-outs for what are presumed to be volume controls and two smaller holes on the bottom for an unknown feature.

A return to a larger form factor for the iPod nano is not out of line for Apple and would be a necessary move in order to fit in a larger touchscreen and home screen button. Hopefully the iPod nano will finally get iOS and apps, too.

In addition to the iPod nano case leak, there is also a clear plastic case said to be for a slightly revamped iPod touch. On that case, there’s a larger cut-out next to the camera hole, which could suggest that it’s getting an LED flash to help improve the quality of photos taken with its paltry camera. There’s also a mysterious circular hole on the bottom of the case that could indicate the iPod touch is getting a better speaker. September 12th can’t get here fast enough.
