All Things D is reporting that Apple is going to hold its annual iPad introduction event during the first week of March. Going one step further, the blog reiterates what the rumor mill (and BGR) has been reporting — faster processor, Retina Display, same basic size and shape, with possibly a dash and sprinkle of 4G LTE. The iPad 3 is expected to be available by the second or third week in March, and iOS 5.1 may be released even sooner.

Apple is planning to unveil its next-generation iPad 3 at a media event in early March and it will launch the new tablet later that month, Japanese blog Macotakara reported on Thursday. Prior to that press conference, however, Apple is said to be planning a separate “unusual” media event in early February. The subject of Apple’s supposed February event is unknown, however Macotakara states that it will not be product-focused. The iPad 3 is widely expected to feature a slightly thicker case than its predecessor to accommodate an upgraded high-definition display and a larger battery pack that will reportedly double the battery life of the iPad 2. BGR published evidence on Wednesday that Apple’s next-generation iPad will also feature a quad-core A6 processor and embedded 4G LTE connectivity.

UPDATE: Loop Insight has refuted claims that Apple will hold a media event later this month. The claim that Apple might unveil its iPad 3 at an event in early March was not addressed in The Loop’s report.

Samsung reportedly confirmed on Wednesday that it will not be unveiling the Galaxy S III during the Mobile World Congress trade show next month. The news is partially in line with earlier rumors. Instead, TechRadar reports that the firm has plans to announce the highly anticipated smartphone at a separate press conference later in the first half of 2012. “Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012,” a Samsung spokesperson reportedly said. “The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product. Samsung stays committed to providing the best possible mobile experiences for customers around the world.” BGR exclusively reported last month that Samsung has plans to unveil a new high-end tablet with a high-definition display at Mobile World Congress, and this device is expected to be the highlight of the company’s announcements in Barcelona, Spain next month.

Facebook announced on Tuesday that the company’s Timeline feature will be forced on users “over the next few weeks.” Facebook introduced the Timeline feature last year, which transforms a profile page into a timeline of a user’s life, highlighting photos, posts and life events that help tell the user’s story. Once activated, people will have seven days to preview the Timeline content before it goes live on the account. Last week, Facebook added a feature that enabled apps to populate timelines with new information, such as a virtual passport to share a user’s favorite locations.

Apple is planning to unveil a new textbook initiative on Thursday that has been codenamed ‘Bliss’ that will likely bolster the use of iPads for educational purposes inside classrooms. AppleInsider has learned that the initiative was first inspired by Al Gore’s book “Our Choice,” which was published as an interactive iOS eBook and which also discusses the current global “climate crisis.” According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s vice president of development for iWork Roger Rosner has been the lead on the project. We’ll certainly know more details on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Eastern when Apple makes its announcement during a press conference in New York City.

Apple reportedly has plans to launch two new iPad models next year according to a recent report. Set to be unveiled at a press conference in January, the two new iPads will join Apple’s iPad 2 to create an iPhone like tablet lineup. The iPad 2 will remain available at an entry-level price point, DigiTimes claimed citing unnamed industry sources, while new mid-range and high-end iPad models will launch early in 2012. Both new iPads will feature dual-LED backlit 9.7-inch displays with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. It is unclear what features might distinguish the new mid-range iPad from the high-end model. The report also claims that Apple’s rumored 7.85-inch iPad will not be among the models to launch early next year. Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair recently said in a note to investors that Apple would continue to sell the iPad 2 at a lower price point following the launch of its next-generation tablet model.

UPDATE: Loop Insight’s Jim Dalrymple noted that according to his sources, Apple has no plans to unveil an iPad 3 at the iWorld expo in January as noted in DigiTimes’s report.

HTC has not found tremendous success thus far with its first two tablet offerings. Despite a carrier deal with Sprint, the Sense UI, a unique note-taking feature called Scribe and a bunch of scantily-clad women toting the tablet at a few events, our sources suggest HTC Flyer sales have not been stellar. The company’s second tablet offering, the Jetstream, was priced out of contention here in the U.S., running $700 with a two-year data contract from AT&T. According to a recent report, HTC’s lucky number three will be unveiled in February at the annual Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, Spain. Details are limited for the time being, but DigiTimes cites a report from Chinese-language Commercial Times in stating that a quad-core Tegra 3 tablet from HTC will be unveiled at the show and will launch some time before the end of the third quarter. Also likely due from the Taiwan-based vendor at MWC are the quad-core HTC Edge and the dual-core HTC Ville smartphones BGR exclusively detailed last week.

If you’re just waiting to blast some Beats audio-laden tunes from HTC’s latest and greatest, November 3rd will probably be a good day for you. That’s the date on the invitations HTC just sent out to the media, and we’re expecting the company to announce the HTC Rezound, also known by the code-name “HTC Vigor” for Verizon Wireless. The device should feature a 4.3-inch 720p HD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera and, of course, Beats audio. No word on whether or not Lady Gaga Beats headphones will ship with the device, though. We’ll be reporting live from the event next Thursday so stay tuned.

Samsung and Google finally took the wraps off their latest joint effort, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and it’s a screamer. The phone is just under 7mm at its slimmest point, and it runs Google’s brand new version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0. The phone’s key specifications match up exactly with what we’ve reported previously, including a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, a 5-megapixel camera with enhancements, a 4.65-inch 1280 x 720-pixel Super AMOLED HD display with curved glass face, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, NFC, a 1,750 mAh battery and plenty more. The phone will initially be available as an exclusive on Verizon Wireless in the U.S., 4G LTE in tow, and in other parts of the world it will feature HSPA+ in a pentaband configuration.. The handset will launch in November, and you can check out a video feed from the Galaxy Nexus unveiling event on Google’s Android channel. With Motorola’s incredible DROID RAZR announcement earlier, we have to ask… Motorola DROID RAZR or Samsung Galaxy Nexus?

It’s official: invitations for Apple’s iPhone event are now being sent to the media. As had been rumored, this year’s iPhone unveiling will be held on Apple’s campus in Cupertino, California as opposed to Apple’s standard venue, the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The press conference will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific, 1:00 p.m. Eastern, and BGR will be bringing you all the news as it breaks.

Despite numerous rumors to the contrary, Apple will only launch one iPhone model this fall and it will be a modest upgrade that closely resembles the current iPhone 4. In a note to investors on Wednesday, Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair says that Apple will hold a special event between September 28th and October 5th to unveil several new devices. Only one of those devices will be an iPhone, however, and Blair says it will be an incremental update as opposed to the redesigned iPhone 5 that has been rumored on multiple occasions. “We expect the focus of the new iPhone will be iOS 5, a speedier A5 processor and a higher resolution 8 MP camera with a small possibility of a larger 4 inch screen,” Blair wrote. “We believe the casing will be largely similar to the iPhone with some particular modifications to the antennae [sic]. We don’t expect a second, dramatically different iPhone to accompany this as we don’t think Apple needs to have 3 models in the market to address the high end, mid-tier and low end since the iPhone 4 (with memory lowered to 8 GB) will drop to $99 and effectively attack those markets.”

The analyst believes that in spite of the anticipation generated over the past few months by the possibility of a redesigned iPhone 5, launching two new models wouldn’t make sense for Apple. “Why would Apple bump up only the processor specs of the iPhone 4 in addition to a newly designed iPhone 5 if the goal is to sell it into the pre-paid market at a lower cost?” Blair wondered in his note. “A 4S would simply cost more and a 4S itself wouldn’t create a mid-tier market unless it was priced at $99 and the iPhone 4 went to $49 with the new iPhone at $199. We see this scenario as unlikely.”

But Wedge Partners does expect another device to be unveiled at Apple’s upcoming event: a 3G-enabled iPod touch. Blair says the iPod’s cellular data option will work just like the iPad, allowing users to purchase data plans on a month-to-month basis with no contractual obligations. The notion of a 3G iPod touch aligns with earlier rumors.

Blair’s iPhone estimates remain at 24-25 million units shipped in Apple’s September quarter, and he sees shipments growing to 27 million units in the December quarter. Calendar-year totals will come in at 91 million units according to the analyst’s estimates, which would represent growth of 92% compared to 2010 and will include sales by new carrier partner Sprint, which he expects to sell 4.5 million iPhones over the next year. Blair thinks Apple will begin accepting pre-orders for its next-generation iPhone within days of holding its media event, which will take place on October 4th according to a recent report.

The most popular smartphone in Samsung history is expected to be unveiled for AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile this evening at a special press event — where we’ll be reporting live — but it looks like new details are beginning to leak out early. Sprint’s version of the sleek Android phone has apparently been revealed by website Stuff-Review. Sprint’s GALAXY S II, or “Epic 4G Touch” as it has apparently been named, will feature a 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and support for Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network. Nokia may be planning to unveil its first Windows Phone later this month, the unwired reports. The site claims to have obtained an invitation to a party hosted by both Nokia and Microsoft. Scheduled to take place on August 17th during the annual GamesCom trade show in Cologne, Germany, the event will apparently include a raffle of three Xbox 360 consoles and three Windows Phones built by Nokia. The invitation does note that the aforementioned Windows Phones will be delivered to winners “as soon as available,” so we’re not entirely convinced the event will follow any sort of announcement. And the choice of venue for such an announcement is at the very least curious, if not illogical. We know that Nokia won’t be pushing out flagship devices from day one, but why announce the first Nokia-built Windows Phone at a trade show for games? Then again, the event invitation does mention “exciting actions and surprises” that “will make it an evening to remember” — and we’re pretty sure no other cell phones will be announced at GamesCom so it wouldn’t have to share the spotlight. Our advice, however, is to not hold your breath. Nokia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
