Amazon is next up to the plate, and the company’s recent commercial takes aim at Apple’s iPad. A woman sunbathing and reading a book on her Kindle is approached by a passing iPad owner who is intrigued by the fact that she can read in the sunlight. When the man mentions the Kindle’s inability to play movies, she points to a cabana where her two children are sitting, each with a Kindle Fire tablet. As a final jab, the woman points out that her three Kindles — one $79 eReader and two $199 tablets — are still cheaper than a single iPad. Amazon’s full commercial can be viewed below.

While smartphone users in general may eventually be caught in the crossfire brought about by Apple and Samsung’s patent battles, a very specific group of smartphone users has become collateral damage in Samsung’s new anti-iPhone advertising campaign: baristas. Samsung’s first run in its new campaign included a quick poke at a creative barista, but now the men and women who serve up hot coffee on a daily basis are the focus of Samsung’s playful attack. Dubbed “Urban Camping,” the company’s new ad kicks off with a pair of Galaxy S II users mockingly admiring an iPhone-toting barista’s latte art. When the barista’s friends enter the coffee shop excited to go camping, one Galaxy S II user harnesses the phone’s 4G speed to instantly reserve a camp site for everyone to use. The simple-minded iPhone owners become disheartened, clarifying that they’re simply camping out on line while waiting for the new iPhone to be released. Hipsters in general were addressed in Samsung’s earlier ads, but the company appears to now be “Samsunging” more specific groups of consumers it deems likely to own iPhones. With Super Bowl XLVI coming up on February 5th and Samsung having lined up a pricey ad spot, baristas may want to avert their eyes and hide their coffees during commercial breaks this year. The new Galaxy S II ad can be watched in full below.

Apple’s first television advertisement for the iPhone 4S began airing on Thursday and it bills the new smartphone as Apple’s most amazing iPhone yet. Titled simply “Assistant,” the ad places Apple’s new virtual personal assistant Siri front and center as it rapidly passes through a montage of iPhone 4S owners calling on Siri for help. One man asks Siri how to tie a bow tie, while a concerned woman asks for the fastest route to Hartford Hospital. A businessman asks Siri to reschedule his meeting and a young girl asks what a weasel looks like. The commercial runs through a dozen scenarios where Siri comes in handy, wrapping things up with a woman who locked herself out of her home. The woman simply states, “I’m locked out,” and Siri quickly uses her GPS location and a web search to replies with “I found 3 locksmiths fairly close to you.” Siri is the gift that keeps on giving, of course, and this is the first of many ads we’ll see touting the iPhone 4S’ most compelling new feature. A video of Apple’s Assistant spot follows below.

Apple began airing a trio of new iPhone commercials recently, and one in particular caught our attention. “If you don’t have an iPhone,” the ad begins, “you don’t have the App Store. So you don’t have the world’s largest selection of apps.” Accurate as that statement may be, we can’t help but wonder why — with this massive war chest of apps Apple loves to brag about — the company’s ad agency couldn’t find a few that are actually unique to the iOS platform. Delta Air Lines’ mobile app is available for both Android and BlackBerry phones as well as the iPhone, and the Starbucks Card Mobile app debuted on the BlackBerry platform at the same time it was launched for iOS.
In a recent press release, mobile device giant Nokia announced a tentative, signed agreement that will jettison the commercial licensing rights of the Qt development platform to Digia. “Through the proposed acquisition, around 3500 desktop and embedded customer companies from various industries are targeted to be transferred to Digia,” reads the announcement. “The transaction is expected to be closed by the end of March 2011.” Digia notes that Nokia will continue to “invest in the future development of Qt,” which has been under the LGPL license framework since 2009. The deal will hand control of commercial licensing and service operations over to Digia, who will broaden its global reach by opening offices in both the U.S. and Norway. The full release is after the break.

Digia to acquire Qt commercial licensing business from Nokia

Digia to support broader use of Qt in consumer electronics, industry machines, and other embedded and desktop software solutions.

Helsinki, Finland 7.3.2011. Digia Plc. (DIG1V) has signed an agreement with Nokia to acquire the Qt commercial licensing and services business. Through the proposed acquisition, around 3500 desktop and embedded customer companies from various industries are targeted to be transferred to Digia. The transaction is expected to be closed by the end of March 2011. Nokia will continue to invest in future development of Qt for the benefit of all users, both Commercial and LGPL.

As a result, the commercial licensing and service operations business is to be run by Digia, with existing and new commercial customers, who will benefit from the continuity of development of desktop and embedded Qt functionality and new service models. Building on Digia’s leading Qt expertise, this acquisition further accelerates Digia’s direction towards international, product based business and significantly widens Digia’s Qt customer base. To further strengthen its global presence, Digia will establish subsidiaries in USA and Norway as part of the transaction.

Global growth with Qt Commercial (Qt commercial licensing and services)

The use of Qt as an application and UI framework has been growing since Nokia’s acquisition of Trolltech in 2008. Qt is actively used by around 3500 desktop and embedded customer companies which will be transferred to Digia upon closing. The commercial customers represent a broad range of industries, e.g. consumer electronics, finance, aviation, energy, defence and media. Qt usage has increased the need for solid commercial support and services executed with strong focus. Digia’s additional investment in Qt Commercial licensing and services business on top of Nokia’s significant Qt development work creates a solid foundation and additional boost for creating business solutions with Qt, and opportunity for customers to benefit from Digia services.

“Qt continues to be an important technology for Nokia and it is critical that Qt’s growth and success can continue. While Nokia will continue to invest in developing Qt as a cross-platform framework for mobile, desktop and embedded segments, focusing on open source development and expansion, we wanted a partner who can drive the commercial licensing and services business around Qt. Digia has proven, in-depth Qt expertise, operational excellence and a keen interest in growing and improving the overall Qt community and so well positioned to expand the Qt Commercial licensing and services business,” says Sebastian Nyström, Vice President, Head of MeeGo, Qt and Webkit at Nokia.

“We are excited to extend our Qt business to serve our new customers. Building on our in-depth Qt expertise and experience from demanding mission critical solutions, we will offer world-class commercial licensing and support services to Qt Commercial customers. We also look forward to driving further the evolution of Qt by bringing in new features and services,” says Harri Paani, Senior Vice President from Digia.

Use of Qt in mission critical solutions reinforced – with proven experience

Digia has an ideal background for growing the Qt commercial licensing business and meeting the needs of current Qt commercial customers. Digia’s unique position for Qt commercial business stems from the combination of long track-record in Qt projects since early 2000, creating and operating mission critical business solutions for several industries and commercial software licensing business models. In addition to avoiding open source license restrictions, many customers prefer a commercial relationship that provides professional, responsive support and services ensuring success in their mission critical business solutions.

Digia is a recognized Qt innovator

Digia is dedicated to continuing and growing the Qt commercial relationships and to contributing innovation to the overall Qt community. Digia has stood out in the market as a profitable growth company and recognized Qt innovator, bringing to life the latest Qt technologies in the forefront of the market. With hundreds of Qt experts, Digia is a leading provider of Qt solutions and services.

In addition to acquiring the business responsibility over Qt Commercial licensing and services, Digia also plans to employ 19 persons from Nokia’s technical consulting services team and global Qt Commercial sales and marketing teams. That is targeted to ensuring that the customers will continue to deal with the people they already know.

Digia will invest in the development of Qt as a commercial framework. In particular the plan is to emphasize Qt in the desktop and embedded environments and to examine new support models and functionality requests. Digia will provide commercial customers with improvements in support and functionality for older platforms that were not on the Nokia development roadmap. The holders of a Qt commercial license will be informed about the details separately.

This acquisition will further accelerate Digia’s direction towards international, product based business and significantly widens the customer base for Digia’s Qt business. It also provides Digia’s Enterprise Solution business a world-class offering that has strong synergy with Digia’s Mobile Solution business and expertise.

Motorola Mobility Debuts “Empower the People” Ad Showcasing Award-Winning Motorola XOOM Tablet During Super Bowl XLV

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill – Feb. 4, 2011 – Today Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI), announced that it will debut a new commercial during the second quarter of the Super Bowl XLV telecast. Created by Anomaly New York, the ad will feature Motorola XOOM™, the first device running the Android™ 3.0 Honeycomb operating system designed specifically for tablets.

On the heels of becoming a new company in early January, Motorola Mobility launched a portfolio of devices at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show and received numerous awards for introducing innovative mobile devices. Most notably, Motorola XOOM was singled out among more than 20,000 products to win the coveted 2011 CNET “Best of Show” award.

As follow up to the recent unveiling of Motorola XOOM, the 60-second spot entitled “Empower the People” embodies Motorola Mobility’s commitment to developing intuitive technology to help simplify, connect and enrich people’s lives. Motorola XOOM redefines the ever-growing tablet category by providing more ways to have fun, connect with friends and stay productive on the go. Watch videos, play games, read books and surf the Web all on Motorola XOOM’s 10.1” HD widescreen display.

Just as “Tablet Evolution” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quI2I8wLPdc) got people buzzing before the CES Motorola XOOM announcement, “Goodbye 1984” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndhuEUX1kIU) further generates interest in the Super Bowl XLV spot and new award-winning tablet.

“The Super Bowl offers a special opportunity to connect a broader consumer audience to our new company, brand and devices as the most watched and celebrated sporting event of the year,” said Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer of Motorola Mobility. “Our new ad featuring Motorola XOOM demonstrates how people have more options to connect with each other, in a very personal way, through technology.”

The stylishly thin Motorola XOOM boasts a dual core processor for a smooth performance and its sleek design features a front-facing camera for video chats over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G LTE, as well as a rear-facing camera. Motorola XOOM is the first tablet to connect to the new Google Mobile Innovation service offering books, music and movies – anytime, anywhere.

In addition to being an official wireless provider for the NFL and Super Bowl XLV advertiser, Motorola Mobility will be the first-ever title sponsor of the Maxim party.
