Apple may have delayed the iPhone 5 launch until next year due to an overheating dual-core A5 chip, a new report from Sohu.com suggests. Rumor has it (and it’s purely a rumor right now) that Apple will instead launch the iPhone 5 later this year or early next when the A6 chip is available — or after it figures out the A5 overheating problems. Sohu.com also said Apple will instead introduce a slightly upgraded “iPhone 4S” device, with the same form factor as the iPhone 4, in September or October. The device is expected to feature an 8-megapixel camera, and it will also sport a faster dual-core processor, two specs that are on a par with earlier reports. With all the recent chatter surrounding a more significant iPhone update due later this year, it’s likely that Sohu.com is working with old intel in this instance.

Research In Motion Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis on Thursday revealed that the 4G versions of RIM’s PlayBook tablets will not launch this summer, as the company had previously announced. The delays were mentioned in passing as Lazaridis mentioned how excited he was to be launching 4G PlayBook models this fall. RIM had previously stated that three 4G versions of its PlayBook — an LTE model for Verizon Wireless, a WiMAX model for Sprint, and an HSPA+ model for AT&T — would launch this summer. Here’s something we don’t see everyday — Vodafone New Zealand has tweeted that it’s delaying the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play after a “major security breach.” According to the carrier’s official Twitter account, the shipment of Xperia Play units was stolen at some point on its way to the carrier. It’s unclear who pulled it off or how the heist took place. Vodafone has not provided any other details as to how long the launch will be delayed.

Dell confirmed on Thursday evening that users of its Dell Streak tablet who purchased the device through AT&T will have to wait until next year to receive an update to Android 2.2 (Froyo). In a post on the company’s Direct2Dell blog, Dell states that Streaks SIM-locked to AT&T’s network will not be updated to Froyo until some time in January. Dell began updating the European version of the Streak to Android 2.2 last month, and stated at that time that AT&T devices would receive the update in December. Dell did not specify a reason for this new delay, stating only that it would continue to work with AT&T to release the Froyo update. AT&T’s version of the Dell Streak currently runs Android 1.6.

First things first… how did you like our BlackBerry Bold review? If that just made you crave the device more, you might not be too pleased with the latest info we got. We’ve been told that the Bold might have been pushed back yet again. What’s the whispered launch month now? September for a lot of carriers. That’s not to say it couldn’t launch sooner on a couple carriers, but that’s what we were told. It looks like there are still some problems with the radio code that have to do with network roaming, searching, etc. The Bold software has not even gone GM3 yet, and with weekly builds still coming out, there’s nothing to be shipped at this point in time. The hardware side is done, but as usual, these units are waiting for the final flash to start FedExing. Now, what about the BlackBerry Thunder? We’ve held on to this information for a bit, but now that we’ve confirmed it with 2 independent sources, we’re ready to run with it. Here are the most confirmed Thunder dates: a huge marketing push in the U.S. starting in September, and device release in mid-October on Verizon. We said November because we were betting on a couple week delay which, knowing RIM, certainly wouldn’t be out of the question. But, we’re told RIM is fully active in doing everything they can to get the Thunder launch-ready, even putting it above the Bold in terms of prioritizing.
