Everyone’s favorite muscle-bound nerd brought iOS fans great news on Tuesday: iOS 5 has already been jailbroken. The Dev Team’s “MuscleNerd” posted on Twitter that he has successfully jailbroken Apple’s iOS 5 software using Limera1n. Right now his jailbreak is tethered, meaning the device must be connected to a computer each time it is booted, but this version of the jailbreak will never reach consumers so it doesn’t really matter. MuscleNerd says the exploit used to jailbreak the iOS 5 beta will still work on the final release version, so iOS users can sit pretty knowing the latest version of the operating system will likely be jailbroken immediately following its release this fall.

The infamous Dev Team announced on Thursday evening that redsn0w has been updated to support Apple’s latest version of iOS, 4.3.3. For the third iOS update in a row, the Dev Team says it has been able to use the same exploit to jailbreak iOS. The Team wonders aloud why Apple hasn’t addressed this issue yet, and we’re hoping the answer is that the software team in Cupertino is currently focusing on more pressing matters. In the mean time, owners of Apple’s iPhone 4 (GSM), iPhone 3GS, iPad, third or fourth-generation iPod touch, and second-generation Apple TV can now feel free to update and jailbreak away. Unfortunately, the Dev Team’s iPad 2 jailbreak is still in development.

Considering the Dev Team had an iOS 4.3 jailbreak ready and waiting long before Apple pushed out iOS 4.3.1, the 10-day wait for an untethered jailbreak seems like an uncharacteristically long amount of time for our favorite iPhone hackers. Regardless, the day is upon us and PwnageTool for iOS 4.3.1 is now available for download. The new version supports the iPhone 4 (GSM only), iPhone 3GS, first-generation iPad, second-generation Apple TV and the third and fourth-generation iPad touch models. The iPad 2 is not currently supported. The new build also lacks support for Verizon Wireless’ iPhone 4 since iOS 4.3.1 is not yet available for the device. The DevTeam notes that those with unlocked devices should wait, as ultrasn0w has not yet been updated.

Apple released the latest version of its mobile operating system last Friday and within 24 hours, a tethered jailbreak method became available to the public. This should hardly be unexpected, as the Dev Team had said it would wait for iOS 4.3.1 before releasing a jailbreak solution for iOS 4.3 in order to avoid having Apple fix the latest security hole the Dev Team planned to exploit. A “tethered” jailbreak affords users the same ability to customize iOS as the standard jailbreak, but it requires that the device be tethered to a computer in order to boot. An untethered jailbreak is not advisable for most users and the wait for an untethered solution won’t be long, so we definitely recommend waiting a few days before jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Earlier this morning, dev-team member MuscleNerd tweeted that he, and his gang of merry men, have successfully tweaked their ultrasn0w iPhone unlocking tool to working on Apple’s latest mobile iOS iteration, 4.2.1. If you read further down the twitter timeline, it looks like — for the time being — ultrasn0w is only working on iPhone 3G/3GS handsets with a baseband of 05.15.04; the iPhone 4 uses a different baseband and still needs more work. Despite not having a one-stop unlock for all iPhones, the dev-team will release the working version of ultrasn0w for the iPhone 3G/3GS in the very near future — they will not make users of said handset wait until the iPhone 4 exploit is completed. The folks responsible for the development of iOS jailbreaking software PwnageTool — the dev-team — have posted a quick one-minute video demoing their latest iteration of the tool. Using the SHAtter exploit discovered by pod2g several weeks ago, the dev-team has managed to jailbreak one of the new fourth generation iPod touch devices. The dev-team writes:

Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it’s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4’s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. In any event, this is another exciting time for iPhone and iPod touch users…the cat and mouse game continues!

Lord of the Devs – MuscleNerd – has confirmed that the latest jailbreak exploit discovered by pod2g will indeed work beyond the iPhone. In a tweet, MuscleNerd writes:

Great news for all those who prefer their iDevices jailbroken. No time estimate has been given by the dev-team or others as to when we could potentially see the exploit tools in the wild; we’ll keep you up to date on any progress that is made.

Almost in unison with Apple releasing iOS 4.1, iOS tinkerer pod2g announced a bootrom exploit that will allow the jailbreaking community access to the innards of the California company’s mobile operating system. The exploit will eventually facilitate the next wave of iDevice jailbreaking, and isn’t something that can be plugged with a simple software update; Apple would have to flash a new bootrom to iPhones, etc. before they leave the factory. The iPhone Dev-Team is cautioning that all users steer clear of iOS 4.1 for the time being, but know that they — and others — are on the case.

UPDATE: We’re being told by someone who has knowledge about this exploit that in order to patch this particular bootrom hack Apple would need “a whole new processor rev.” A re-flashed or patched bootrom for the current hardware would not be sufficient.

Dev-team member MuscleNerd gave an update — via Twitter — on the carrier unlock progress of the iPhone 4…and so far, things are looking up. The baseband-unlocking code used by the dev-team on the first, second, and third generation iPhones (ultrasn0w) needs to be completely rewritten for the fourth generation model — thanks to a new baseband employed by Apple. Short and sweet was the amount of time it took the iPhone Dev-Team to jailbreak iOS 4, at least as far the previous generation of Apple iHardware is concerned. Adding to yesterday’s release of redsn0w beta, PwnageTool 4.0 was set free this afternoon and promises to jailbreak/hacktivate devices provided a specific set of criteria are met. They’re back at it again. The iPhone dev-team has released an update to their popular jailbreaking software, PwnageTool, for Mac OS X. The new PwnageTool — version 3.1.5 — boasts the ability to properly jailbreak Apple’s recently released 3.1.3 iPhone/iPod Touch firmware. Before you get too excited, the dev-team does offer up this proclamation, “Unless you’ve personally observed a problem with the reporting of your battery percentage, there’s no reason to update to 3.1.3.” For those that feel the need for a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch with the 3.1.3 firmware follow the read link; let us know how it goes in the comments.

Those of you who abstained from updating your iPhones to OS 3.0.1 for the sake of keeping your device jailbroken and/or unlocked will be pleased to know you apparently have nothing to worry about. The iPhone Dev Team is reporting that the same versions of redsn0w and ultrasn0w that worked for OS 3.0 are fully compatible with the new software, albeit with the aid of a little more trickery than usual. To jailbreak, all you need to do is install the 3.0.1 software, fire up redsn0w, select the IPSW file for OS 3.0 (you still have that on your computer, don’t you?) and sit back while the magic happens. To take it one step further and soft unlock, just grab ultrasn0w through Cydia and you’ll be on your merry way. In case you’re wondering how this works, it all has to do with the fact that 3.0.1 is essentially a carbon copy of 3.0 with the only real difference being the code that patches up that nasty SMS exploit.

History shows us the Dev Team always works with the quickness, but this time the folks who have unleashed a world of new functionality for the iPhone are slowing things down. Before you fall flat on your back and start kicking and flailing around, know that there are very good reasons for the iPhone 3GS jailbreak delay. In a nutshell, not enough people have the 3GS in hand yet according to the Dev Team, and the exploit it attacks to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS is volatile — Apple is going to have a very easy time plugging the hole. Because there are a handful of issues in OS 3.0, the Team also feels OS 3.0.1 is extremely close to release. Oh, and Apple has to do something about that pesky ultrasn0w as well of course. For anyone wanting to jailbreak, just relax for a little while and let the Dev Team do its thing and do it right.
