Via a press release, Samsung is letting you know that its Galaxy S is “now DivX Certified for HD video playback at 720p resolution,” and that it is “the world’s first Android mobile phone that is DivX Certified for HD and the second overall DivX HD Certified phone.” DivX CEO, Kevin Hell, was quoted as saying, “We’re pleased that Samsung recognizes the importance of the DivX brand in providing their consumers with a seamless, high-quality entertainment experience.” To view movies in sweet, 720p HD, “consumers can load their video libraries of both standard definition and HD 720p movies [to] the DivX format on the internal and external memory.” There you have it. Anyone out there particularly fond of the DivX format?

Although there are no guarantees it will ever see a release Stateside, details of a new and nicely spec’d smartphone from LG have emerged from Korea. Known by its model number LG LU2300, the Android 2.1 device is said to be on par devices like Google’s Nexus One and HTC’s Desire thanks in part to its 1GHz processor, 3.5″ WVGA AMOLED capacitive display, 5 megapixel camera, 720p DivX compatibility, DMB tuner and the always welcomed combination of GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G. As we alluded to above, there’s no way to know if the LU2300 will ever make it to this part of the world, but we don’t think anyone would object to having another supercharged smartphone to chose from.

Random thought: Could this actually be the “aloha“?

Not exactly like this came out of nowhere, but just recently in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress, Samsung announced the Wave S8500. It runs Samsung’s new OS, Bada, and is packed to the brim with features. We’re looking at a 3.3 inch “Super AMOLED” display, a 5 megapixel camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 1 GHz CPU and loads of multimedia support. If you’re a multimedia junkie, you’ll be pleased as punch to find out that the Wave will have multi codec support for DivX and XviD formats as well as 720p video recording and decoding along with “virtual” 5.1 surround sound. Pricing hasn’t been announced but look for it to start shipping in April.

Samsung doesn’t have much in the way of sneak peeks at CES, but we did manage to catch a glimpse of two international handsets. First is the Omnia Pro or Samsung B7610. The Omnia Pro doesn’t look too much like its cousin, the Omnia II, and it features a slide out QWERTY keyboard. It’s also a Windows 6.5 device that has a front-facing camera for video chat. Unfortunately, the only carrier in the U.S. that supports video chat of any kind is AT&T and it’s only one-way video chatting. We’re also looking at a 5 megapixel camera, 800MHz processor, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, push email support and a 3.5″ AMOLED WVGA display. The other touch screen phone from Samsung is the Samsung Jet. It’s smaller than the Omnia Pro and it bears a striking resemblance to the Omnia 2, yet the OS is different. Featuring a blazing fast 800MHz processor, Wi-Fi, one-finger zoom, DivX and XviD support, it’s also packed with a 5 megapixel camera, face and blink detection, MS Exchange ActiveSync, 3.1″ AMOLED display and a 3D user interface. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a pretty swanky phone, but honestly, it doesn’t really get us excited. If you’re looking to swipe one of these international devices, our pick would be the the Omnia Pro.

Today Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Spica i5700, a wallet-friendly Android smartphone that we’ve been keeping tabs on since September. On sale now in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States with availability in the Middle East and Asia coming shortly, the Galaxy Spica features an AMOLED touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera, DivX support (a first for Android), 3.5mm headphone jack and an 800MHz processor. Oddly enough, official pricing was omitted from the press release, but last we heard it was to go for around 350€ or $524 USD.

The official arrival of LG’s Viewty Smart might not have been as well coordinated as LG may have liked, but the highly-anticipated successor to the popular Viewty is now official. Featuring an 8 megapixel camera with a Schneider-Kreuznach lens, the Viewty Smart will be able to take pictures at up to 1600 ISO and record videos in “DVD-quality” with DivX and XviD playback to boot. Other than that, a 3″ touchscreen display with WVGA resolution, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, aGPS, Wi-Fi and the rather interesting 3D S-Class UI round out the rest of the 12.4mm thin package. So when can you get it and for how much? According to LG, Europeans will be the first to get a crack at the Viewty Smart this May and sometime after that it will start to trickle out across the globe. While LG may have shown off the Viewty II at a trade show or two, it’s actual existence had never been officially acknowledged by the Korean company until now, as the handset has been officially featured on LG’s German blog. Although the company did reveal some very nice photos of the device which has also been given the nickname Viewty Smart, very little was mentioned in regards to the specs of the phone itself. However, since its spec sheet was captured by an eagle-eyed trade show attendee a few months back, we know the following:

• 12.4mm thin, 90g
• S-Class 3D UI
• 3-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) touchscreen display
• Quad-band GSM, HSPA, WiFi, aGPS
• 8 megapixel Schneider-Kreuznach camera, Xenon flash

Find it odd that the company would provide such a small amount of info on its blog? Yeah, it looks like there was a bit of a mix up as the post in question has since been pulled — though the bright side is that the blog now states more info will be available in a few days. Perhaps then we’ll get a better idea of pricing and release timing as well.

The arrival of the LG Viewty’s successor is rumored to take place some time this June, but only for our good friends in the UK. Jealousy would be an issue towards Orange subscribers across the pond because this iteration packs an 8 megapixel camera with a host of picture/video options, new S-Class 3D user interface, WVGA touchscreen, A-GPS, DivX, Dolby sound, 32GB expandable storage, 7.2 Mbps 3G speed and Wi-Fi. Phones of this capacity seem to be increasingly standard fare these days, but we’re still excited when they launch. If you’re looking to dodge crazy crowds and frantic lines this summer, maybe, don’t let this one slip under your radar.

It looks like all you Canadian touchscreen lovers out there are going to have one more decision to make as we’ve been informed Bell is set to launch the Samsung Omnia between April 9th and 12th. Popular and well received on the Verizon network in the US, the Omnia is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional handset with a 3.2″ 240×400 touchscreen display, GPS, Wi-Fi and EV-DO Rev. 0 / Rev. A. Of particular note with the Omnia is its 5 megapixel camera with auto focus, image stabilization, face detection, smile detection, LED flash and finally DivX/XviD video playback. No word yet as far as pricing goes but we figure it can’t be all that bad since the most Bell is currently charging for a smartphone is $199.95.

Samsung handsets have been leaking like a faucet in an old horror movie lately and today seems to be keeping the trend alive. Thankfully, this time around we’re seeing blurrycam photos and preliminary specs of what looks to be a full-featured handset rather than a river of entry-level phones. With an eye on multimedia, the Samsung Acme i8910 has a familiar form factor and what is rumored to be a heck of a spec sheet. As for the moniker – Acme – yeah, we have no idea but we don’t remember Wile E. ever pulling one out of a package. Here’s what the rumor mill has so far:

• 8 GB and 16 GB versions
• 8 megapixel camera
• Secondary front-facing camera
• HD video recording
• DLNA and DivX support
• HDMI output
• 3.5mm audio jack
• Wi-Fi
• GPS

Wow. There’s no word on when or where this puppy will drop or what the price point will be but with all of the Samsung handsets leaked over the past few weeks it’s a pretty safe bet that several of them will make their way to the show floor at MWC.
