There’s no denying that the Droid X floodgates are wide open now. Over at the Android Forums some new photos of the device have emerged by way of user matrix2004. Far more fascinating than the typical leaked images, what makes these ones special is that the show off the X next to EVO 4G, iPhone 3G and Droid Eris giving us a good idea of its size. No surprises here, but it’s absolutely massive. Other things of note in the image are some of the custom widgets that come along with “Shadow BLUR&...

Have a new Android smartphone from HTC? Obsessing over whether or not it will get an official FroYo plus Sense UI update? Well fear not, because HTC has issued a statement to sooth your panic-stricken soul. Unfortunately, it’s so vague that it actually raises more questions than it answers. According to HTC:[...] if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly antici...

Just a quick little note to all of our friends with a Verizon HTC DROID ERIS, as the Android 2.1 OTA software update has begun. Being a gradual rollout, only about 1,000 people will get an on-device notification prompting them to begin the update before the night’s end. If you’re not fortunate enough to be one of those people, 9,000 more users will get the nod tomorrow. All told, Verizon is planning to push the update to all of the DROID ERIS users by the 16th of May. As always, a full changelog i...

Seemingly forgotten in the shadow of the Motorola DROID, the DROID Eris may finally see an update to Android 2.1. The support page for the DROID Eris has been updated and now contains information about a new version of Android that is slated to hit the aging handset. Though the Android version included in the update was not specified, the changelog clearly points to it being the much anticipated Android 2.1. No date for roll out was listed but internal rumblings suggest that it may hit before the month of May...

With Verizon soon to be carrying some hot new smartphones from HTC and RIM, the carrier has decided it no longer has a need for the HTC DROID ERIS and BlackBerry Tour 9630. In an internal memo sent out during the week, Verizon informed employees that the DROID ERIS will reach end-of-life at the end of May while the Tuh-Tuh-Tuh Tour (it’s been a long time, eh?) will hit the same brick wall in June. They’ll be around only as long as their stock holds up, so in case you’re dying to have eithe...

Last night we posted a friendly survey asking some easy questions about Android. It included the devices that it runs on and also what everyone loves and dislikes most about the platform. We had an awesome response to it in a pretty short time period (over 2,800 completed surveys since last night), so here are the results! (more…)

The folks over at MOTO Labs (not related to Motorola) demonstrated a DIY yourself technique that allows the average person to easily compare touchscreen performance between multiple handsets. The test is performed by opening a drawing application on the test handset and drawing a diagonal pattern of straight lines very slowly on the screen. A good touchscreen will produce straight linear lines, while a poor touchscreen will produce wavy lines. To demonstrate the technique, MOTO Labs did a comparison test betw...

Verizon just let us know that an OTA update for the HTC DROID Eris is being pushed to handsets at about midnight this evening. The ROM is 1.16.605.1 and the radio version is 2.32.40.11.09 for those inquiring minds. Just as Motorola’s OTA update worked, the DROID Eris will as well — slowly to a small group of people, then expanding over the coming days. Here’s a brief list of some of the fixes and you can always check the documentation on Verizon’s site. While on a call and the device is...
We’ve received word that the HTC DROID Eris on Verizon Wireless will definitely be getting an OS upgrade sometime in Q1. We haven’t been told exactly what OS version it will be (Android 1.6, 2.0, 2.1), just that Google Maps Navigation will be included.
Neither is confirmed at the moment, but we’ve heard that AT&T, starting Friday, will be offering 50% off any BlackBerry smartphone with new activation and minimum $30 monthly data package. Separately we’ve been told Verizon Wireless will be offering up their infamous buy-one-get-one-free promotions for their Android handsets, the DROID and DROID Eris. That’s supposed to start December 4th as well. Thanks, phenomenalone and Emily!

Alright, fellas. It has been one heck of a journey, but today, the Motorola DROID and HTC DROID Eris are finally on sale to the general public. From what we’re hearing, stock levels are insanely high so it doesn’t look like many people that want one will miss the opportunity to take one home. If you’re in line, or at the store, or already snatched one and have made the trip home, shoot us in some photos in the comments and let us know how you’re liking the new Android lineup on Verizon...

One of our connects already did one for us, but there’s nothing like having a handset (and a box) in your own possession. Also what our guy reported seems to be spot on: this thing is thinner, lighter, and a lot more pocketable than Sprint’s HTC Hero. The only other change, we’re told, is that the DROID Eris has a proximity sensor on the screen. We’ll put together something more formal in a little bit, but in the meantime check out a couple photos after the jump! (more…)

You already know we smashed this one, but in case you don’t… Release date? Check. Spy shots? Yes please. Unboxing? Sure. Press release? Well, we figure we would let Verizon handle that one. Today, HTC and Verizon officially announced the November 6th launch of the DROID Eris on the “there’s a map for that” network. This handset has all the goodies: Wi-Fi, GPS, a 5 megapixel camera, 3.2″ touch screen display, and HTC’s Sense UI. The price tag is set at $99 on contr...

One of our connects just blessed us with a couple shots of the HTC DROID Eris and graciously unboxed the retail packaging. We could bore you with meaningless details about how the phone is thinner and lighter than the Sprint HTC Hero, feels much better in the hand, and is generally the best Android device besides the Motorola DROID our connect has used, but we’ll stop there. Enjoy the photos! Thanks, Jon! (more…)
