There’s good news today for Canadians who are looking to replace their ageing Nokia E71s, as it was officially announced that the Nokia E72 will be coming to Telus. The E72 builds upon the feature set of its predecessor with a 5 megapixel camera, optical trackpack, 600MHz processor and 10.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity. Pricing and a release date were not announced, although our friend at Mobile Syrup have it on good authority that it will launch on July 11th, most likely for $50 on contract or $330 outright. Anyone thinking of picking one of these bad boys up?

Last August, Microsoft and Nokia teamed up to bring Microsoft Office functionality to Nokia’s smartphone lineup. The first fruits of this joint venture have come in the form of the newly announced Microsoft Communicator Mobile. Just as the name implies, Communicator Mobile will improve the peer-to-peer communication within Nokia’s Symbian-powered handsets by allowing users to view a colleague’s current status, check their availability on a certain date, and launch an IM session, send a text, or write an email from within the contact card. The mobile communications client will be available initially from the Ovi Store for Nokia’s E71 and E72 handsets, while future E-Series handsets will ship with Communicator Mobile pre-installed.

The BlackBerry 9700 isn’t the only announced handset that is being released today, and for those of you who prefer a phone with a bit more of that international appeal, may we present to you, the Nokia E72. Let’s recap some of the specs for those of you who may have forgotten: 10.2Mbps HSDPA, integrated compass, A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, S60 3rd Edition, improved email functionality, and a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera. The Nokia USA store and Amazon are still listing the E72 as “pre-order” but we are hoping to pick up a unit or 12 before the day is out. Let’s face it. Unless you’re really into BlackBerrys and have your heart set on the Bold 9700, you don’t really have a whole lot of choices for a new candybar QWERTY smartphone. But that’s just fine with us, because Nokia’s E72, the successor in every sense of the word to the much loved E71, is now up for pre-order on Amazon. No, it’s not some crappy Euro version that likes to play “football” and drink tea; this is a real red meat eating, red, white and blue NAM edition. It’s unlocked, $469, comes in any color you like so long as it’s Zodium Black and seems destined to sell a lot of units. Why? Because Nokia has discovered just how easy it is to move handsets through fire sales.

Whether or not you’re a Nokia fan, a Symbian fan or a smartphone fan in general, there’s really no denying that Nokia’s E71 is one of the sexiest phones to ever hit the market at this point. It’s thin, sexy, functional, versatile and solid as a rock. When it comes to slim QWERTY handsets in fact, there’s probably only one we can think of that might be even sexier — the Nokia E72. As it turns out, the North American (NAM) variant of said beauty just made its way through the halls of the FCC and has been given the all-clear from the powers that be. To refresh your memory specs-wise, you’re looking at 10.2Mbps HSDPA (not in the US, of course), an integrated compass, S60 3rd Edition FP2 and a 5 megapixel camera. Need we say more? Considering the E72 is now through the FCC’s testing process we can safely make two assumptions: 1. It’s bound to hit store shelves pretty soon. 2. Surprise, surprise! Shortly after showing up on YouTube, Nokia has officially announced the Nokia E72 alongside the 5530 XpressMusic at Connection 2009 in Singapore. The E72 is a worthy successor to the E71 with 10.2Mbps capabilities (where networks allow, of course), an integrated compass, S60 3rd Edition FP2 and a 5 megapixel camera. In slightly less glamorous news, the 5530 will be an EDGE phone with a 3.2 megapixel camera and a 640 x 360 touchscreen, which we’re hoping will at least be resistive. Although it has Wi-Fi, there is no 3G to be found and that leaves us speechless. Seriously, Nokia? You put out a phone capable of speeds over 10Mbps and you’re still making EDGE-only phones? Ok fine, this will help make the phone insanely accessible compared to the competition but sheesh, are 3G radios that expensive? The E72 and 5530 XpresMusic will be available in the third quarter for about $489 and $278, respectively.

Think your $99 Nokia E71x from AT&T is all that? It might very well be, but you might just change your tune and turn green with envy as Nokia’s Conversations blog has just posted a video of its successor, the E72, to YouTube and it looks to be quite a nice update. A 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, optical trackpad, 3.5mm headphone jack and S60 FP2 are all we know about the device at this point in time, though we’re sure there’s plenty more to come in the near future. The video has since been removed from YouTube, so hit the jump for a couple of up close and personal screen caps.

Ok, there’s a whole lot of back and forth on the net with regards to the Nokia E72 / E63 or whatever it is that showed its pretty little face in the recently-leaked promotional video from Nokia shown above. We know that the slider has been dubber E75 thanks to a few leaked live images but the E71 look-a-like is still a bit of a mystery. Until now. Two BGR tipsters and an anonymous third source have suggested that this upcoming QWERTY Eseries will in fact be dubbed E72. What’s more, it will be a branded handset available exclusively through AT&T. That’s right people, it looks like AT&T is finally going to give a little love to a decent S60 handset. Aside from the differences we already pointed out, the E72 should be pretty identical to the E71 specs-wise with one other major revision… Feature Pack 2. Sorry E71 owners, it looks like AT&T customers will finally have an edge on the unbranded folks. So just as the E62 was AT&T’s version of the E61, the E72 will be AT&T’s E71. Great! Now that we’ve cleared that up, it’s time to start digging into the mysterious third upcoming Eseries that surfaced today – the E63.

Well lookie what we have here. The leak of a promotional video containing two upcoming Nokia Eseries handsets, at the time labeled E72 and E75, has spawned some digging around a few of the common sources of Nokia info. Say hello to three new XML files that represent the coming of the E63-1, E63-2 and E63-3. Because of the timing of all this it is certainly logical, though not certain by any means, that the E63 is in fact the final label that will be slapped on what we referred to as the E72 earlier. Ok then. So if the E72 does in fact turn out to be the E63, here’s what we know about this puppy so far:

• 320 x 240 pixel display
• S60 Feature Pack 1 (OS 9.2; not FP2 love for Eseries apparently)
• GPRS / EDGE / UMTS
• WiFi
• Three variants, presumably with varying flavors of 3G (same as the E71)
• Basically an E71 with a thick candy shell

Beyond that, it looks like the E72 / E63 will see a much-needed boost in terms of camera resolution, possibly even by way of some Carl Zeiss love. From the video it also looks like the size of the space key has been reduced by about 50% to allow the “/” and “@” keys on the left side of the board to be spread out (possibly with volume controls on each key). On the right side, it looks like the control and character keys have been separated as well. Honestly, we would have preferred to keep the wider space key – good luck typing out that email quickly when every other “space” ends up being a “/”.

It looks like Nokia might have two new enterprise handsets looming on the horizon. The guys over at Symbian Freak have uncovered a video (unfortunately pulled from YouTube on behalf of Nokia, but not before some screen shots were snagged!) of two new Eseries phones. The E72 basically appears to be an E71 dipped in paint (though it may have a 5 megapixel camera) while the E75 is an entirely new form factor for Nokia’s high end line. It’s a slim candy bar with a traditional 0-9 keypad beneath the screen as well as a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Not much else is known about these new phones.
