George Hotz, the hacker better known as “geohot” has joined the team at Facebook. Hotz made a name for himself in the enthusiast community as an iPhone and iPad jailbreaker with his blackra1n tool, and he’s was also sued for jailbreaking the Sony PlayStation 3. Reportedly, Hotz joined Facebook in May and recently wrote on Facebook that the social network is “really an amazing place to work.” Hit the read link for a video during which GeoHot mentions his recent move.

Mr. Hotz, noting his passion for transparency and dislike of piracy, explained why he does what he does and why the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) — even in its newly modified state — doesn’t afford him safe harbor from Sony. Geohot’s iOS 4.x jailbreaking utility limera1n has been available for Windows since 10/10/10 and now, thanks to some handy coding, it is available for the Mac as well. Late last month, news of root access and an early userland jailbreak of the iPhone 4 hit Twitter courtesy of @chpawn, @plantebeing, and @musclenerd. A mere few weeks later and we have word of another successful jailbreak, this time coming from well-known iPhone hacker Geohot. Neither party has released their jailbreak tools to the public and Geohot is pretty clear that he does not want folks pestering him for a release date. So all you iPhone 4 owners waiting to free your handset from Apple’s walled garden must learn to be patient and keep your mouth shut, capeche?

The latest blog post from iPhone firmware slayer George Hotz (geohot), dated April 9th, contains no words… but then again, words aren’t really necessary. The image shows his popular blackra1n iPhone jailbreaking software, and accompanying Cydia package manager, loaded onto an iPad. The post comes one day after Hotz posted the encryption keys for the iPad 3.2 firmware sets, and several hours after having tweeted about being able to boot the iPad into verbose mode. Hotz has yet to post an iPad compliant version of the blackra1n software on his site, but it is only a matter of time now. Stevesy (Jobs, not Zissou) is certainly not going to like this. iPhone hacker extraordinaire George Hotz aka geohot has just teased the iPhone community with a 68 second video showing off a new untethered jailbreak. Here’s his statement:

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models [iPod touch G2, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch G3], and will probably work on iPad too.

Everyone’s favorite iPhone outlaw, George Hotz (better know as geohot), has been at work mastering another piece of hardware: the PlayStation 3. And so far, Geohot has had quite a bit of success. On his blog, Hotz writes, “I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me.” Now, Geohot is adamant that the hacking is for scientific purposes only, and he is not trying to provide a vector for software piracy; the ultimate goal would be to run home-made code or other operating system software such as Linux on the PS3. Although against piracy, Geohot is looking to post the decryption keys used by Sony so others can assist him in his scientific endeavor. About a week ago, geohot released an update to his iPhone jailbreaking software dubbed Blackra1n RC2, and while that was all well and good for all you AT&T guys, it did leave those of us who need a baseband unlock on our iPieces wanting more. Enter blacksn0w. Demoed on YouTube, the blacksn0w exploit will provide a baseband unlock of the 3.1.x firmware allowing your iPhone to run on your preferred GSM carrier. Blacksn0w will be released to the jailbreaking baseband unlocking masses on November 4th and can be loaded onto your device directly from Blackra1n. Boo ya. Our favorite iPhone outlaw, geohot, has released an update to the iPhone jailbreak software blackra1n. Dubbed RC2 the update addresses several issues including:

• Fixes 3G signal issues
• Tethered jailbreak for 3.1 OOTB iPod touch 8GB and new 3GS’
• Fixes issues with package software”Icy“
• Versions for both Windows and Mac now available

To be perfectly honest we’re surprised it took this long. Reports are surfacing that Apple is now shipping a new bootrom with the iPhone 3GS that is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit used by the Dev-Team and others to jailbreak the iPhone. DevTeam member MuscleNerd confirms that the bootrom update, dubbed iBoot-359.3.2, would make jailbreaking new iPhone’s “impossible” for the time being. Man, does Apple hate when people muck with the iPhone or what! Your move Dev Team — and godspeed. Or maybe our ninja GeoHot can find a way around it? We’ll see!

Following up on the success of purplera1n, iPhone hacker extraordinaire geohot has released a jailbreak solution for OS 3.1.2 dubbed blackra1n. Currently only being offered to Windows users, blackra1n works on all generations of the iPhone and iPod touch, although the 3rd gen iPod touch needs to be tethered. The installation method for blackra1n is unchanged from that of its predecessor meaning that all you really have to do is download and install the app to your PC, plug in your device and make it ra1n. Although it only made its debut yesterday, the iPhone 3GS jailbreakin’ purplera1n has already been updated and now stands at version RC2. Changes include support for Windows 7 and 64-bit rigs, enhanced payload execution, kernal patches, correction of terminal errors and more. Support for Winterboard is still notably absent from purplera1n but every indication is that this is on the way along with OS X compatibility. For those who are running RC1 and want to update to RC2, getting it up and running is as simple as installing the new build on top of RC1. Once again, those who are running the OS 3.1 need not apply.

Deciding that waiting around for the Dev-Team to release its iPhone 3GS jailbreak solution is for chumps, original iPhone unlocker Geohot has released his own jailbreaking method, with the help of chronic dev and a few others, that he has dubbed purplera1n. Best. Name. Ever. As it stands, purplera1n only supports Windows rigs (Windows 7 and 64-bit excluded) but OS X support is on the way. Ahhh, the Dev Team — where would we be without them? Just last week the crew issued ultrasn0w, making jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone 3G as easy as finding a farting app in the App Store. But what about 3GS owners? As fast as the Dev Team works, a separate hacker by the name of “geohot” (the guy who made the first iPhone unlock as well as the injection vector for the first iPhone 3G unlock) has made a major breakthrough with the help of his friends at Chronic Dev. A little before 4:00AM this morning, George Hotz became the first person in the world to have a fully jailbroken iPhone 3GS (picture above). Now of course this doesn’t mean it will be released to the masses just yet, but it does mean we’re unbelievably close to lift off. Geohot ftw! Hit the jump for one more shot.
