Google adds Smart Labels to Gmail’s repertoire

In a recent blog post, Google Software Engineer Stanley Chen revealed the latest addition to Gmail’s feature set, Smart Labels. The new labeling system, which can be turned on via the Labs section of Gmail, tries to help you automatically organize incoming email. “Smart Labels automatically categorizes incoming Bulk, Notification and Forum messages, and labels them as such,” reads the announcement. “‘Bulk’ mail includes any kind of mass mailing (such as newsletters and promotional email) and gets filtered out of your inbox by default (where you can easily read it later), ‘Notifications’ are messages sent to you directly (like account statements and receipts), and email from group mailing lists gets labeled as ‘Forums.’” Smart Labels can be tweaked and customized to fit your workflow and function in harmony with Gmail’s Filters. The new feature is available to all Gmail users immediately.

Google Mail contact syncing option appears on BIS sites

Back on the 3rd we reported the release of BIS 2.8 to North American BlackBerry users, and with that came two-way contact synchronization with Google Mail — one of the new wiz-bang features. Today we’re getting reports from BIS users that now have the Google Mail contact synchronization option available to them from their carriers BIS website. While this doesn’t do anyone much good, as two-way contact syncing requires BlackBerry OS 5.0 or better, it seems to indicate the folks in Waterloo have the full court press on to finally get 5.0 out the door. Or you know, there’s like mad new BlackBerrys coming or something.

Enhanced Gmail Plug-in for BlackBerry currently in the works

If you’re a Gmail user with a BlackBerry this is going to be a proud moment for you, no question. It’s ok to admit it — we’ve all shed a tear or two when thinking about just how poor Gmail integration is on the BlackBerry platform. Read status doesn’t sync, no access to folders/tags and so on. Dry those eyes though, BlackBerry fans, because it looks like RIM is finally planning to start cooking with gas. Rumor has it the Canadian company is hard at work on an “Enhanced Gmail Plug-in” that will add various functionality to Gmail integration. Rumored functions include:

See your Gmail based emails in Conversation View for simple topic management
Add and remove labels and stars to emails to keep inbox organized
Archive and report as spam actions for mailbox management on the go
Search your entire Gmail inbox

The plug-in is being beta tested right now internally and amongst a lucky few outside the company. Mmmmm.
