A report was recently published by Android Police that suggests HTC’s Sense user interface has several major security flaws that provide HTC with access to SMS data, phone numbers, system logs, location information and much more. Worse, the flaw could potentially allow any third-party application to access the same private information without having permission from the user to do so. The security issue has been identified on the HTC ThunderBolt, EVO 4G and EVO 3D. “HTC takes our customers’ security very seriously, and we are working to investigate this claim as quickly as possible,” HTC said in a statement. “We will provide an update as soon as we’re able to determine the accuracy of the claim and what steps, if any, need to be taken.” HTC addressed a browser privacy issue in June and also commented on another report in early September which suggested the Sensation and EVO 3D were spying on users. HTC responded to the browser issue with a fix and said the “spying” allegations were a result of an HTC “opt-in” feature that allows HTC to collect data so that it can improve its phones.

Does Verizon Wireless’ iPad 2 have a connection problem? Some users on Apple’s discussion forums seem to think so. One user named “nixxon 2000″ started a thread in called “iPad 2 WiFi + 3G Verizon Cellular Data Issue” in which the user claims that his or her iPad 2 refuses to connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network. The only fix for this user is to hard reset the device using iTunes. We might typically chalk this up to a user error of sorts, but there are now five pages of replies, many of which are forum posters with the same problem. Reportedly, resetting the network settings doesn’t do the trick, and some Genius Bar employees weren’t able to find the root of the issue. One forum poster named “dtsguy” had this to say on the issue:

Easy way to duplicate: turn off cellular, then reboot normally. 3G will not come back regardless if switched on or off. Only way to turn back on is to 1) switch cellular back to ‘on’ and 2) reboot. All time consuming… Tried restoring, didn’t help……

We’re curious if this is a widespread issue or if it’s just happening with a handful of users, but we hope it’s something that can be fixed through a quick software update in either case.

Reports are beginning to mount from iPod touch owners who are experiencing an odd graphics issue on their devices after updating to iOS 4.3. Screen sections of affected iPods seem to flicker and distort, almost as if the device is having a refresh rate or redraw issue. Some users are reporting that their screens appear “snowy” or “fuzzy.” There is a thread on the company’s discussion board where affected users are airing out their concerns; Apple has yes to publicly acknowledge the issue. Microsoft made news earlier this week when it began pushing its first software update to Windows Phone 7 handsets. The new code — which does not include the anticipated copy and paste functionality – has run into a small issue, Samsung phones. From the moment the code began hitting handsets, reports began popping up from users claiming that the update rendered their phones useless — most of these handsets were made by Samsung. Responding to an inquire from blog WinRumors, Microsoft noted that they have identified a “technical issue” in the update and have taken action.

“In response to this emerging issue, we have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue,” wrote a Microsoft spokesperson.

The update that is currently wreaking havoc on Sammy hardware is, ironically, designed to improve Windows Phone’s update mechanism — which is being updated in advance of a major over-the-air code push next month. Microsoft hopes to release a revised update to the Windows Phone community soon. Any Windows Phone users out there been bitten by this nasty bug?

According to a spokesperson, Verizon Wireless is working on a fix for a hand-off delay that some users are experiencing on the company’s new Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. The delay, which can last up to two minutes, occurs when the USB data stick attempts to switch from CDMA to LTE — the modem is not responsive during that time. The issue has been reported by several members of the press and early device testers.

In the same breath, Verizon also noted that it is actively working on Mac drivers for its LTE hardware. Although no specific timetable was given, the spokesperson did say that the software would be available “relatively soon.”

The Internet is all atwitter with reports claiming that Apple’s iOS 4.2 will, in fact, not be released this week. The rumors — which as far as we can tell all originate from the Greek blog iPhoneHellas – cite a “Wi-Fi bug” that cropped up in the iOS 4.2 gold master candidate that was released to developers late last week. It has been widely reported that the Cupertino company’s mobile OS update would be released to the general public at some point today. We’ve pinged Apple for comment and will update this article with any relevant information provided.

The company has announced that an over-the-air update, being referred to as JI6, is now rolling out to address that pesky GPS issue Galaxy S devices have been plagued with. Today, Samsung and AT&T announced an over-the-air update for the Captivate handset to address the units GPS performance. As the two companies state:

An update to improve the Samsung Captivate’s GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to customers’ devices over the next few weeks.

The update for the Captivate will also improve additional device functions, such as media scanning time, add the full version of QuickOffice and address Microsoft Exchange 2003 policy support.

We know that for many Captivate users this fix can’t come soon enough.

One of our Verizon Wireless sources has just forwarded us an internal email detailing some data issues in the Midwest. According to the email, the issue affects only data, not voice, and is currently happening in over 3 states. Additionally, it looks like there is an issue with “RIM’s Switch” that is playing with the emotions of all carriers nationwide, not just Verizon. How you looking out there BGR friends? Phones working ok?

Yesterday, Facebook acknowledged that their recent Android application update — version 1.3 — contained a bug that was draining handset batteries. The post looked like this:

Hi folks, a number of you have commented on seeing a battery drain on your device since installing the new Facebook for Android app. We have identified the bug that is causing this battery drain and are working on a fix now. As soon as the patch is ready, we will push out an update. Thanks for the quick feedback and for your patience as we get this fixed!

Today, the company has released an updated version of the software — version number 1.3.1 — that, according to a subsequent Facebook post, “includes a fix for the battery drain problem some of you were running into.” Hit the Android Market to install the update. Yesterday afternoon, a Motorola employee named Matt dropped this little nugget in the company’s official forums:

Some Droid X users are experiencing an issue using Exchange 2003 email. Though the email is arriving on the Droid X, no notifications are appearing. A fix for this will be included in the upgrade to Android 2.2 scheduled for deployment by early September.

The post is the closest thing to an official date released by Motorola; up until now the software update has been coming “soon” or “this summer.” Anybody disappointed by the September timeline? Anyone seeing the Exchange 2003 issue Matt goes on to mention in the post?

Verizon and Motorola have come out with an official statement to address screen issues early adopters of the Motorola DROID X are experience; specifically, banding or flickering. The statement is short and sweet, and goes something like this…

Verizon Wireless and Motorola are aware of a very small number of DROID X units that have experienced a flickering or banding display. Motorola has resolved the issue and is continuing to ship the phones. Any consumer who experiences a flickering or banding display should contact a Motorola customer support center or Verizon Wireless.

1:52 PM: GDGT – Q: Is there anything you could have said in the launch keynote to lower expectations? A: I’ve thought about that a LOT. We might have set the expectation that smartphones have weak spots… but the fact is, most smartphones seem to have the same characteristic as the iPhone 4. If you grip them in a certain way they lose signal strength dramatically, especially in a low signal strength area. And one of the things we’ve learned is that as a leader in the smartphone world now, we need to educate. So what we need was data. And now we’ve got some and we’re sharing it now.

But sometimes I feel that in search of eyeballs for these web sites, people don’t care about what they leave in their wake.” Jobs continues, “I look at this and think wow. Apple has been around 30 years. Haven’t we earned the credibility and trust that we’re going to take care of our users? … we weren’t just innocents in this. But the reaction has been so overblown… we could actually use your help here.”

2:09 PM: Ars Techncia – Q: someone asking about return rates at apple stores and how that compares to 3GS. A: It’s been extremely small… almost unmeasurable.

2:11 PM: GDGT – Q: Did you consider a recall? Steve: When you love your customers, nothing is off the table. But we want to be data driven. We send engineers to people’s homes with test equipment and take logs… Bob: For the record, we told them we were coming. Steve: And we didn’t bash down any doors! [Laughs.]

2:12 PM: GDGT – Q (Josh, Engadget): NY Times says this might have a software fix, is this something that can be helped with software? Steve: We just spent the last hour going through how the iPhone 4 drops only 1 more call per hundred than the 3GS. … Go talk to the Times, because you guys talk to yourselves a lot, and they’re just making this stuff up.

2:15 PM: GDGT – Forstall jumped up on stage: “That statement is patently false. Can we continue to tune the way the baseband interacts with the network? Yes, and we do this all the time. But that statement is untrue.” Steve: “One many statements lately that fall into that category.”

2:18 PM: GDGT – Q from Markoff: I’ve used my iPhone on a heavily congested cell in SF. I’d like to know if the handset has any role in congestion management. Does the stack play no role in congestion? Steve: I’ll let Scott answer, but I have something that’s a higher-order bit. When AT&T wants to add a cell tower in Texas, it may only take 3 weeks. But in SF, on average, it takes 3 years. No one wants a cell tower in their back yard, but everyone wants perfect reception.

2:22 PM: Engadget – Q: You released a software update for the iPhone about two years ago which improved the signal. You say now you’ve got a long-standing bug that doesn’t show the right bar data. Can you square those two things? Steve: Well let me say something about Apple. We didn’t want to get into any business where we didn’t own or control the primary tech, because if you don’t the people who do own it will beat you. Our big insight about 8 years ago, was that it was going to shift from big displays or optical pickup heads, or radios being the most important component, we thought it was going to be software. And we’re pretty good at making software, we showed that in the iPod… other people are good at it too, like Palm, but we brought great software to the smartphone space. We’ve been able to create and distribute major updates to this software since the iPhone was released, and we’ve made the product better and better for free. Everyone is copying us now, but we were the first ones to do it. To answer your question, the formula we use the calculate bars has been off since the beginning, and the new update fixes that for the iPhone 4, 3G, and 3GS… I don’t know if I understand the other part of your question?

2:25 PM: Ars Technica — Jobs just said that he thinks people posting his emails on the web are a little rude. Yeah, who the hell would do…oh, wait…
