We told those pesky grey marketers that they’d better get a move on if they were hoping to make a few quick bucks importing the Dell Streak into the U.S. Today at D8, Dell announced that it will be bringing its gargantuan 5″ Android smartphone/tablet to the U.S. on or around the end of July. At that time, $500 will get you unlocked Streak complete with a 5″ WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 16GB of internal memory, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and 1GHz Snapdragon processor and Android 2.1. As if resident of the UK didn’t already have a line-up of handsets to chose from that would make even the most reserved American green with envy, today Dell announced that it and O2 will be releasing the Dell Streak in early June. A giant amongst smartphones, the Streak features a 5″ WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, 16GB of internal memory, support for microSD cards up to 32GB, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. To debut with Android 1.6, Dell says the Streak has been “designed with the future in mind” and will be subject to OTA updates which will bring Adobe Flash 10.1, Android 2.2 “Froyo”, and video chat apps to the Streak before the year’s end. According to Digitimes, ASUS is putting the final touches on the Eee Pad, a device that will be blur the traditional lines between PC and MID and feature a touchscreen display between 4 and 7″. And that’s it. Told you it was short.

Last year’s CES was a veritable snooze fest save for unveiling of the Palm Pre and webOS, but this January’s show looks to be much more promising thanks in part to Dell. As anyone who frequents this site will recall, a prototype MID made by Dell known as the Streak was recently shot up while on vacation in Vietnam with its 5″ WVGA touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, 3G radio and Android 2.0 in tow. It is this device that Pocket-lint has been told will try and take center stage at CES at a time when big-time nerds the world over are salivating over anything and everything tablet. But we have to ask: with devices like the ARCHOS 5, JooJoo and mythical Apple tablet already available/on the horizon, are any of you guys and gals excited for the year of the MID, or do you already have enough techno-crap eating away at your monthly paycheck?

Remember when The Wall Street Journal said that Dell was working on an Android MID? Well it turns out that it was bang on as today images and a video of a prototype device known as the Streak emerged by way of everyone’s favorite Vietnamese mobile site. Running Android 2.0, the Streak boasts 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5″ WVGA multitouch capacitive display, 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, Bluetooth, microSD and a 1300 mAh battery. Looking through all of the pictures, we couldn’t help notice what looks to be the spitting image of a front-facing camera for checking ones hair video calling, but then again it could just be the worst ambient light sensor ever. Enough talk. Hit the jump for a ton of pics and a video, because the Streak cries out to be seen.

While the world waits with bated breath to see what will become of Symbian in the hands of the Symbian Foundation, another Nokia-owned OS is the talk of the town today: Maemo. Maemo has a home on only three devices that are currently available — the Nokia 770, Nokia N800 and Nokia N810 Internet Tablets. These MIDs haven’t been very well received by consumers so we find it a bit curious that China-based electronics house Optima would choose to go a similar route. The OP5-E does boast much better specs than Nokia’s Tablet trio however: 5.6 x 2.9 x 0.69 inch frame, 806MHz Marvell PXA320 CPU, 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, microSDHC support, 4.3-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen, GPS, EV-DO, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, a 3.2-megapixel camera and a 2600 mAh battery. The saving grace may very well be the fact that this MID is said to have phone and SMS functionality coming in the future, likely meaning it will be upgradable to Maemo 5. Maemo fans looking for a new fix might be interested in checking it out but we’re holding out for Maemo 5 and the seemingly sexy N900 before we bother playing with Maemo again. Having been talked about for quite some time and then all of a sudden dropping off the radar, talks of an Android-powered device from Dell has once again resumed. This time The Wall Street Journal has supposedly confirmed that Dell does indeed have “several Android-based smartphones that it plans to start selling later this year,” something that meshes nicely with the 2G and 3G devices we spoke of some two weeks ago. Perhaps more interesting however, is that Dell is believed to be working on an MID that is also said to run on Android, and it will reportedly be a little larger than Apple’s iPod touch. The WSJ cautions those who are prone to getting ahead of themselves that while Dell intends to release the MID later this year, the possibility its launch will be delayed or canceled cannot be ruled out. Duh. At least the phones are allegedly a lock.

Rumors of Apple’s entrance into the world of tablets were brought back into sight this morning as a recent Apple patent revealed the possible design for an upcoming tablet offering from Cupertino. You’ll likely recall rumors that flew around in late December, originating from three separate TechCrunch “sources close to Apple”, stating that Apple was working on a larger-scale iPod Touch-like device slated for a Fall 2009 release. While the patent illustrations don’t necessarily depict a bulked up iPod Touch as described by TechCrunch, they certainly do appear to feature a touchscreen computer with no physical keyboard in sight. A few of the illustrations in Apple’s patent application show a bottom plate on the device that appears to have lines very uncharacteristic of Apple’s current crop. As such, we’re lead to believe this device, if it ever sees the light of day, may possibly be branded entirely separately from Apple’s current offerings (as opposed to being dubbed, say, MacBook Touch). Well, it’s no ModBook Pro but it’ll certainly turn heads and have digital designers dying to break out their credit cards.

We’ll be the first to admit that it’s not easy to get people very excited about a Windows Mobile-based handset these days. With the proliferation of far more innovative, useful, fast, and aesthetically pleasing mobile operating systems, Microsoft’s work horse appears poised to fade even more in the coming years. That said, if Mio’s MID pictured above is any indication, companies are still committed to pushing the OS to its absolute limits. One of Windows Mobile’s biggest virtues has been its flexibility, spawning a cornucopia of form factors and devices types over the years. Mio’s “handset” is one such marvel, sporting a stunning 800×480 screen. Specs for the production version of the device have yet to be finalized, but the prototype currently on display at CES is running Windows Mobile 6.1 with GPS, Wi-Fi, USB out, a full QWERTY keyboard, and more all powered by a 667mhz ARM processor. We’ve known that Mio has been gunning for the Windows Mobile market for quite some time, but this looks to be above and beyond our expectations. Sadly, given its prototypic nature, we can’t promise that this thing will ever see the light of day, but we can think of more than a few reasons why Mio should give it a go.

Last week, rumors were flying about a mysterious device with a swivel screen that was tentatively identified as the Palm Roteo. The folks over at Blog Times in Korea have dispelled that rumor however, and have identified the mystery device as the Compal Tabasco MID, a 4.5-5 inch touchscreen device with swiveling display that made its debut as a non-functional prototype at Computex 2008. The Compal Tabasco sports dual cameras with a front facing webcam and a rear 3.2 megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom and a flash. It also comes in with MID-sized dimensions of 160(W) x 85(H) x 33~35(D) mm, a mini touch pad and a 35 key QWERTY keyboard. It is not clear whether this device ever made it out of the prototype stage but we highly doubt that it will show up as the Palm Roteo come 2009. Then again, Palm was rumored to have placed a large order with Compal back in August so you never know. Hit the jump for a few more shots.
