The latest, cost-effective rumor surrounding the Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM is sure to pique the interest of the few penny-pinching readers. Blog Droid-Life is reporting that Sam’s Club (of all places) will be selling the Wi-Fi XOOM for a cool $539. This undercuts the $599 price tag Motorola Mobility’s CEO, Sanjay Jha, slapped on the device just two weeks ago. A 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet with 32GB of storage, and host of other high-end features, sounds pretty good to us – especially at $539. Thoughts?

Though not confirmed on all counts, it looks like Apple’s iPad 2 will be available from several third-party retailers at launch. Best Buy, the nation’s largest consumer electronics retailer, has already confirmed that it will carry Apple’s second-generation iOS tablet starting March 11th, as was expected. 9to5 Mac now reports that in addition to Best Buy, nationwide retail giants Walmart and Sam’s Club will both carry the iPad 2 at launch as well. Both chains already have iPad 2 SKU numbers showing in their respective inventory systems, the blog’s source claims. The report might help quell rumors of potential launch inventory shortages that have been swirling for the past month.

In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing made this past Friday, RadioShack stated that it will be losing more than 400 kiosks located in Sam’s Club stores across the country. The closures will result from an expiring contract between RadioShack and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., owner of the Sam’s Club chain. Sam’s Club will take over the operation of the kiosks by June 30th, when the contract is set to expire. RadioShack currently sells cell phones and service contracts through the aforementioned kiosks, and it represents a decent chunk of business for the retailer — through the first nine months of 2010, RadioShack reported $20.6 million in profits from its kiosk business. RadioShack plans to increase the number of Target kiosks it operates in an effort to curtail losses, but the company estimates that its kiosk profits will still decline by between $10 million and $15 million in 2011.

Following RadioShack’s lead, it appears as though Sam’s Club will be offering discounts on Apple smartphones for the holidays. A purportedly leaked memo states that the discount retailer will be selling Apple’s iPhone 4 (16 GB) for $147 with a 2-year AT&T service contract. This represents the lowest price we’ve seen to date on a new iPhone 4, though only by $3. Sam’s Club will also apparently give Apple’s iPhone 3GS the same $52 discount, with new units costing just $47 during the promotional period. According to the unconfirmed memo, the sale is set to run from now until Christmas Day.

If you’ve been wondering whether the Motorola Droid (or Tao, or Sholes — whatever), BlackBerry Storm 2, BlackBerry Curve 2 or LG Chocolate Touch would be hitting Sam’s Club stores or even TARGET, you’re in luck. We just scored an internal document outlining merchandising, training, locations, and pretty much everything else you’d need to know. While Sam’s Club appears to be set up to carry the Motorola Android handset, TARGET seems to be left out. We won’t bore you with some of the more technical stuff, though. Here’s a shot of the Motorola Droid looking pretty fly in an all black everything outfit. There actually looks to possibly be a front-facing camera on the phone. It seems to corroborate our earlier report of some cool face recognition action, or it could just simply be the European variant. There’s placeholders for the LG Chocolate Touch, BlackBerry Storm 2 and Curve 2 in here, and we might have a little bit of copyright infringement on our hands, folks. We’re now just over a week away from the culmination of an ongoing saga that has been the iPhone 3G’s dance over to Wal-Mart. Whew! For a bit of background in case you’ve been hiding from the economy in your basement for the past few months, BGR scooped it back in October, served it in November and then stirred it up a little in December. So far it’s looking like everything is falling right into place as a new letter emerges, essentially reaffirming everything we told you. This letter isn’t a mere redundancy however, as it provides the last pieces of the puzzle we hadn’t yet confirmed: size and price. Earlier this month we told you about a possible $99 iPhone that we were plenty skeptical about, and for the time being it’s a no-go. Wal-Mart will be selling the same 8GB and 16GB models everyone else has, for $197 and $297 respectively — a whopping $2 savings over competitors. Smooth move Apple; give Wal-Mart the ability to sell a discounted iPhone but keep other partners happy by making the discount insignificant. As for the possibility of a $99 iPhone, analysts might charge you an arm and a leg to tell you “it’s a distinct possibility” but it doesn’t take weeks of poring over blogs research and calculation to tell you it’ll be here sooner rather than later. Shortly after we posted about the iPhone coming to Wal-Mart this morning, it seemed like all of our ninjas came out of the woodwork to bombard us with info. Rather than post an update, we want to lay out what is now confirmed info. First and foremost, it looks like Wal-Mart will indeed begin selling the iPhone 3G on December 28th in select locations only. When all is said and done, about 2,500 locations will offer the iPhone 3G. Some stores will also be getting live demo units to display just like Best Buy Mobile. What’s more, we’re also now getting word that 69 Sam’s Club locations (locations that use the Wal-Mart ordering system, not the Radio Shack ordering system) will offer the handset as well – also beginning on the 28th. As Sam’s Club is a division of Wal-Mart, this certainly makes sense. Unfortunately it looks like everyone is still in the dark with regards to pricing and we expect it to stay that way to avoid slowing MSRP iPhone sales during the holidays. Won’t people be happy when they find out Apple’s handsets popped up at discount prices three short days after Christmas? Hit the jump for some internal Wal-Mart correspondence.

We are pleased to announce that Wal-Mart has reached agreement with Apple to offer iPhone 3G in Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart-managed Sam’s Club* Connection Centers nationwide beginning December 28, 2008.  AT&T will support Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club with the activation process for iPhone 3G, and we need all National Retail employees engaged to ensure a successful launch.

*NOTE: This product launch DOES NOT apply to SC Kiosks within Sam’s Club managed by Radio Shack.

Wal-Mart has communicated the following launch plans and execution timeline to their employees:

• iPhone 3G will be available in-store only beginning 12/28/08
• New and existing customers in good standing can purchase iPhone 3G with a 2 year contract
• iPhone 3G transactions only will be processed through POS.com, not the kiosk
