For once, we’re prepared to say that wireless carriers exhibiting sheep mentality is working in the best interest of the consumer. Funny that. Just as we thought, Sprint is preparing to follow closely behind T-Mobile’s recent Unlimited Family Talk announcement, officially revealing some new options for Shared Plan subscribers hoping to get some friends and family in on the unlimited action. Beginning June 15th, Sprint will begin offering unlimited messaging, data, GPS navigation, and more for Shared plans. The catch, unfortunately, is that your additional lines won’t be able to share an unlimited bucket of minutes. $129.99 nets you 1500 shared minutes, with 3000 minutes coming in at $169.99. This includes 2 lines, with additional lines coming in at $19.99

If you’re only interested in sharing unlimited messaging along with your bucket of minutes, expect to pay $99.99 for 1500 minutes, $149.99 for 3000 minutes, and $9.99 for each additional line. We’d like to see an Unlimited Calling option akin to T-Mobile’s new plans, but all-you-can-eat data for a fraction of the cost of the current add-ons is certainly an impressive place to start. Anyone getting ready to jump in?

Following last week’s news that Sprint would be joining the ranks of AT&T and Verizon in implementing a 5GB cap on some of their advertised “Unlimited” data offerings, the company has issued a response in an attempt to clarify their stance. First off, the new cap only applies to data cards and tethering, which means that anyone with a handset-specific unlimited data plan, including Simply Unlimited subscribers, will not be affected. Business accounts will be similarly unaffected. Furthermore, a single month of overage will not freeze a user’s account. Sprint will be using a three month rolling gauge, with a given user having to exceed 5GB in 2 out of the 3 months to register an infringement. First warnings will be issued as a formal reprimand, with further action taken on a case-by-case basis. Sprint also plans to offer data usage monitoring on Sprint.com beginning June 8th. We’re glad the company has taken the time to clarify their new stance, as misconceptions are often born out certain corporations unwillingness to communicate. That said, we still wish they would simply change the marketing material to something other then “Unlimited” to reflect their new policies.
