Wirefly this month unveiled a new service option for its popular mobile backup service. Mobile Backup PRO, which is compatible with the Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile 6.5 devices, affords subscribers a host of functionality not available with the standard free service. For starters, PRO subscribers get either 10GB or unlimited storage for music, photos, videos, and any other data backed up using the service, depending on the subscription option they choose. Free subscribers only get 2GB of storage. For added value, PRO subscribers can also use the service to locate their phone remotely using the device’s GPS, lock and unlock their phone remotely, display a message on the phone’s display, sound an alarm on the phone, and completely erase the phone’s memory remotely. Wirefly’s full-featured backup and remote security solution costs $2.99 per month or $30 annually for one phone and one computer with up to 10GB of storage. $5.99 or $60 annually grants users unlimited storage for up to five phones and one computer. Both plans feature a free 30-day trial for users who enter the code “WMBPRO.”

Than you had better make with $150 post-haste, because one of the last Windows Mobile 6.5 devices you’ll ever see — the LG Fathom — is now available from Verizon. This things been the subject of more than its fair share of leaks, but in case you never caught the memo, you’re looking at a 1GHz processor, 3.2″ WVGA display with haptic feedback, 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fib/g/n, GPS, EV-DO Rev. A, 2100MHz 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM, and WinMo 6.5.3.

We knew it was coming…and now it is official. Verizon Wireless and LG have just announced the release of their newest Windows Mobile 6 joint venture, the LG Fathom. The Fathom packs a: 3.2″ touchscreen with haptic feedback, full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 1 GHz processor, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.2 megapixel camera, micro SDcard slot, an unspecified GPS unit, and Windows Mobile 6.5.3. The Fathom is a travel-friendly “world phone,” as it packs both CDMA/EVDO and GSM/UMTS chipsets. It can be all yours on May 27th for $149 after a $100 mail-in-rebate. Any takers?

We know there’s a big Apple iPhone announcement looming over, but that still shouldn’t stop some of those Verizon faithfuls from getting excited over brand new devices, right? We’ve scored shots of the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and LG Fathom making its way into Verizon’s internal systems. Most of you know all about the 9650, but the Fathom VS750, is a global Windows Phone with a QWERTY slider, 3.2″ WVGA display and 3.2 megapixel shooter. Couple this discovery with Verizon’s teaser that went out about six new devices coming, we should probably assume that the wait is almost over folks. Hit the break for a shot of the Fathom resting easy in Big Red’s system.

We haven’t been able to independently verify this in any way, but nonetheless we thought we’d share it with everyone as it makes a lot of sense. One our of Verizon connects hit us up last night and let us know what they’ve heard are five of the six upcoming handsets VZW was teasing about yesterday: the HTC Incredible, LG VS750, Microsoft’s “Pure” and “Turtle” and the Samsung Reality. As we mentioned, our connect isn’t sure what the sixth is, but we’re guessing it could be either the BlackBerry Bold 9650 or even Verizon’s Google Nexus One. Anyone hear otherwise?

T-Mobile is tapping into the popularity of the HTC HD2 with the creation of a trade-in program which allows iPhone owners to turn in their hardware in exchange for a credit ranging from $100 to $350 to be used towards the newly released smartphone. Available only by phone, at non-corporate dealers and through the usual business channels, the only conditions are that the iPhone being traded in must be in full working condition. Not a bad deal at all considering anyone taking up the offer doesn’t even need to sign up for a service contract. Now if only T-Mobile was able to keep these things in stock until the promotion ends on May 19th.

Man do we kind of feel bad for T-Mobile this week. Not only did they show up to CTIA with nothing but a crappy netbook, but today they start selling the HD2, a smartphone most people have already forgotten about thanks to the EVO 4G. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement — tons of people have been waiting for this phone for almost six months and no doubt a few die-hards are going to be queued up outside some T-Mobile shops to be first. But do you think they’re going to be all smiles this summer when things like the EVO 4G and fourth-gen iPhone are on sale and they’re 19,999 pennies lighter and still have over a year and a half to go on contract? Nope.

As far as we here at BGR are concerned, once a product is physically in store it’s good to be sold regardless of whatever the squares at corporate may think about it and its designated street date. In the spirit of this (and because it’s an admittedly slow Sunday), today we’ve got a few videos of a T-Mobile HTC HD2 that YouTube user JDMiPhoner managed to snag at a Vancouver, WA Walmart a few days ahead of its March 24th street date. He decided to post a series of hands on videos which cover the unboxing, first boot up and configuration, app overview and a demo of voice commands. Excited? Good, because we’ve gone through the trouble of queuing them up after the break for your viewing pleasure.

HTC Touch Pro2 users on Sprint should stock up on party hats and streamers as the Now Network is gearing up for a Friday release of the long overdue software update to Windows Mobile 6.5. To be available through both the Sprint and HTC websites, the update will finally bring Sprint’s Touch Pro2 up to snuff with that of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon handsets, the last of which received its update back in January. Thanks, Sprint. For a moment there we thought you forgot all about this.

T-Mobile already has a very diverse lineup of smartphones, but the tail end of March will see “Magenta” (as some people lamely call it) release a trio of smartphones that appeal to the low, mid and high end markets. We’ve been saying it for the longest time and now it’s as official as can be without a full-blown press release: the HTC HD2 will be available from T-Mobile on Wednesday, March 24th. Going for $199.99 on a 2-year or $449.99 outright, the HD2 will easily be the best handset ever offered by T-Mobile in terms of sheer brawn. Of course now that we’re 100% certain it won’t be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7 Series, we have to wonder if a bit of the luster has prematurely worn off, but it’s not like those put off don’t have more than half a year to save pennies for the next greatest Windows Phone. On the same day, Nokia will also have a handset debut on T-Mobile. This is of course the Nuron and it will go for $69.99 / $179.99, a price that is quite mind blowing when you consider the fact it’s running S60 5th Edition. Last but not least in today’s T-Mobile update is the CLIQ XT. We’ve known for quite some time it is going to be available in time to drown in a pitcher of green beer, but now we’re hearing it will be $99.99 on contract as opposed to $129.99 (no contract pricing is presumed to still be set at $329.99).

Good job, T-Mobile.

Last night was easily the best night of the year for the celebrity-crazed paparazzi. It also turned out to be a pretty darn good night for the smartphone paparazzi as well for two upcoming T-Mobile handsets were given the star treatment on their very own red carpet. First up was the HTC HD2, the infinitely lovable Windows Phone with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and gargantuan 4.3″ WVGA display, which looked as stylish as ever in Sense UI by HTC. Never one to miss an opportunity to show support for those in need, the HD2 took a moment to show off its Blockbuster app which will allow proud owners to download movies on demand. Immediately following the HD2 was the Nokia Nuron. Although the general consensus was that it was dressed more for the Kids Choice Awards than the Academy Awards, the Nuron made a bit of a stir when it shrieked at the top of its lungs how it had seen the light, converted to Buddhism and was now on a mission to convince everyone that less is more and that all other smartphones cannot possibly be as happy as it is living with S60, an OS that is on its way out. When will us ordinary folk get a chance to meet these stars? The Nuron is still a mystery, but we’re still very confident on a March 24th debut for the HD2.

HTC had a very busy day at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, as it announced three new handsets: the Desire, HD mini and Legend (above left to right). Although they’re all quite different, they do have a few things in common including GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, G-sensors, 3.5mm headphone jacks and dual-band (900/2100MHz) 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity. Having said that, there are some huge differences as well, so let’s run through each device.

By far the most impressive of the bunch is the Desire. Best thought of as the Nexus One with Sense UI (albeit with a single mic), it has a 3.7″ WVGA AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB ROM / 576MB RAM, optical joystick, fully supports Microsoft Exchange, runs Android 2.1 with Sense UI, is Flash enabled and 10.1 ready. It will be available in both Europe and Asia starting in Q2.

Next up is the Legend. A handset that that oozes sex appeal thanks in part to its chassis machined from a single piece of aluminum. The Legend features a 3.2″ HVGA AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera, 600MHz MSM7227 processor, 512 MB ROM / 384MB RAM, optical joystick and Android 2.1 with Sense UI.  Anyone living in Asia will have to wait until Q2 to get a Legend, but Europeans will begin to have access to it next month.

Last but not least is the HD mini. A scaled and powered down version of the HD2, the HD mini has a 3.2″ HVGA multi-touch capacitive display, 5 megapixel camera, 600MHz MSM7227 processor and 512MB ROM / 384MB RAM. It does indeed run Windows Mobile 6.5, although we were told it will not receive an update to Windows Phone 7 Series. That might sound a bit off-putting, but let’s be honest; you’re going to want the latest and greatest hardware when that OS is released. Look for it in Europe and Asia as of Q2.

We’ve mentioned that each of the new devices has Sense UI, and HTC was quite pleased to announced it has updated the skin. Some of the new features include general enhancements to the UI, a social media aggregate app called Friend Stream, a newsreader widget and Leap, which is basically card view. We haven’t heard anything US-specific, but European and Asian Hero owners will be getting the update in the near future.

Any smartphone worth a darn has GPS capabilities, but some are more adept at finding their way than others. After getting a reputation for a company that takes it sweet-ass time launching a handset, Garmin-ASUS today announced two new handsets in the nüvifone A50 and nüvifone M10. First up is the A50. An Android device with a 3.5″ HVGA touchscreen display, 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA connectivity, 4GB of internal memory and accelerometer, the A50 is said to be one heck of a pathfinder thanks in part to its e-compass and GPS chipset that draws location signals from satellites as well as network and terrestrial sources. Add in not apps like Google Maps and cityXplorer but Garmin’s very own pre-loaded turn-by-turn navigation software and one no longer has any excuses for getting lost while driving to the in-laws new country cottage. Moving on we have the M10. Running Windows Mobile 6.5.3, it isn’t as spec’d out as the A50 GPS wise, but it still can take on any other smartphone and even many dedicated GPS units with one hand tied behind its back. Physical characteristics include a 3.5″ WVGA display (resistive), Wi-Fi and HSDPA radios, 512MB of RAM and ROM and 4GB of in-built memory. Consumers and procrastinators should note each handset features support for just about every location-based and social media service under the sun, while corporate types will be pleased to note that Microsoft Exchange is fully by both phones. And yes, the A50 does have a multi-touch WebKit browser. Barring any unexpected delays, both devices will go on sale by the end of Q2.
