Apple may seek $3B in patent damages from Samsung instead of the $1B it was awarded

Samsung (005930) may one day look at a California jury’s $1 billion patent infringement verdict as an act of mercy. Unnamed sources have told the Korea Times that Apple (AAPL) “plans to ask U.S. Federal Judge Lucy H. Koh to triple the amount” it won in a post-trial hearing on the case scheduled for September 21st, which would bring Apple’s total winnings from the Samsung patent trial to an astonishing $3 billion. The Korea Times thinks that Apple’s request for $3 billion will be the moment “when the world sees the American technology giant turn into a patent monster.”
