Not Netflix, Not Disney: This Streaming Platform Is The Most Popular In The US
Nielsen's TV viewing trend aggregator The Gauge indicates that nearly half of American television viewers flock to streaming as their primary media intake outlet. In that sphere, services like Netflix, Disney Plus, or even Amazon's Prime Video may be the first that'd come to mind as the most likely outlets to take the cake as the most popular streaming platform.
It seems more people are watching content like video essays, let's plays, and short-form videos as their go-to entertainment medium today. The Gauge reported in July 2026 that YouTube's main app was the most-viewed streaming service on the scene. There's little competition between the video-sharing platform, of which 14.2% of Americans primarily choose for their entertainment needs, and competitors like Netflix, which sits in second place at 7.8%. YouTube usurped the throne as the king of streaming in February 2025, and has firmly retained its title ever since. The last entity that held the designation was The Walt Disney Company, which owns and operates an army of entertainment brands including Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus. Given YouTube's major lead over its rivals, the company doesn't seem likely to budge from its top spot anytime soon, even if it's cramming in ads and making your TV experience worse on purpose.
YouTube stands out from other streaming services
YouTube's recent dominance over other streaming services may be due, in part, to the increased social interactivity and engagement opportunities. Production company Early Light Media pointed out that the video platform, unlike rivals like Netflix or Disney Plus, features social media aspects such as commenting, sharing, and liking that give it a pivotal advantage other services lack in a social network-driven society. It's also free to upload and watch videos on YouTube, thus providing a major draw over its subscription-driven adversaries. The company's paid tier, YouTube Premium, is a relatively affordable tradeoff for features like ad-free viewing, access to YouTube Music, and background listening.
The overwhelming anxiety of choice presented by other services' seemingly endless libraries could also prompt some viewers to pick YouTube's free service instead. "It seems like many people have gone from not knowing what to watch on Netflix to just turning on YouTube," one Reddit user wrote. Others appreciate how you can log into YouTube from pretty much anywhere, whereas services like Netflix require users to access the app from their main household. Thus, it makes for an easily accessible entertainment source whenever you're on the road or in a public space.
