5 Disadvantages Of Shopping At Sam's Club For Tech

If you think of gallon-sized jars of mayonnaise or massive bottles of olive oil when you think of Sam's Club, you aren't alone. However, the warehouse club retailer has many other products at its stores beyond large quantities of food. There are hundreds of consumer tech, gaming, and electronics products you can buy on a budget at Sam's Club.

However, you may wonder whether the warehouse club is the best place to buy these tech items. It can be helpful to understand some of its drawbacks before you put down the money for a membership. Some of the biggest disadvantages to shopping for tech products at Sam's Club include limiting your smartphone plan carrier choice to T-Mobile (unlike Costco or Best Buy, which work with multiple carriers) and failing to carry Apple MacBook laptops. Sam's Club also doesn't offer price matching against competing retailers (unlike Best Buy) and commonly sells warehouse-club-only televisions that have slightly different features and model numbers from similar options offered at other retailers. If any of these disadvantages would directly affect the way you want to purchase your consumer tech products or electronics, you may want to look toward other retailers that offer different purchasing options and services.

Sam's Club works only with T-Mobile for smartphone plans

General wisdom tells you that comparing costs for smartphones and usage plans from the three major carriers is a good way to save money. You may believe that leveraging the promotions available among the big three carriers (Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile) can lead to a great deal that meets your needs.

If you want to buy a smartphone and sign up for a service plan in one step at Sam's Club, though, you won't be able to leverage the big three against each other because it only lets T-Mobile operate inside the warehouse club. Sam's Club began partnering only with T-Mobile in 2024 to offer deals and packages on smartphones and subscription plans inside the store. Previously, Sam's Club allowed AT&T to operate inside the warehouse.

If you want more choices, one of the perks of buying a new phone from Costco is that you can pick from plans and offers from either AT&T or T-Mobile. Best Buy also offers options from more than one of the major carriers, as it gives customers the chance to purchase hardware and subscription plans from Verizon or AT&T.

If you want an Apple MacBook, skip the Sam's Club membership

It's not unusual for people to have brand loyalty when they're shopping for computer tech products. Apple consistently ranks among the most popular brands for consumer loyalty. For Apple fans, purchasing any laptop other than a MacBook would seem unusual, as the MacBook easily works in conjunction with the other Apple products they already own, like an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Sam's Club offers many kinds of computers and related products, including laptops, gaming monitors, and desktop computers. Sam's Club also sells many kinds of Apple-branded products, including iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watches. However, it doesn't sell Apple MacBook laptops, which frustrates some customers.

If you want MacBooks, you can find them at many different electronics retailers, both in stores and online. Amazon, the Apple Store, Best Buy, and B&H Photo Video all have MacBooks for sale. However, if you want to take advantage of warehouse club pricing, Costco has MacBook laptops for sale, including several different models and screen size options. If you want to trade in an older MacBook or another Apple device, Costco pays members for trade-ins through its website.

If you find a deal elsewhere, don't ask about price matching

If you are a shopaholic, one of your favorite parts might be looking around for, and finding, great deals. You then might try to convince a local retailer to match the price that you found elsewhere, helping you save money. When you're buying consumer tech products and electronics, which tend to have a higher starting cost, you can potentially save a lot of money by taking the time to request price matching from your favorite retailer.

If you love the thrill of price matching, you'll want to skip even asking at Sam's Club. The warehouse club retailer does not match prices you find at competing retailers. Individual Sam's stores might choose to match prices that you find at other Sam's Club stores, but the Sam's Club parent company does not have a policy that forces a store to match prices found at other retailers.

On the other hand, Best Buy clearly touts its "price match guarantee," both for online and in-store purchases of qualifying competitor products. B&H Photo Video and OfficeMax both do some limited price matching against major competitors on tech products, too.

TV models at Sam's might not match those at other retailers

When you're deciding which TV you want to buy, you may compare prices from several different retailers to find the biggest bargain. You might consider TVs with the same screen size, model year, and manufacturer.

However, if you include Sam's Club in your price comparisons, you need to take a closer look at the actual model number of each television. It's common for warehouse clubs (like Sam's Club and Costco) to offer televisions that look almost identical to those at popular electronics retailers, but the model numbers are frequently different by one letter or number. Such televisions may perform similarly and have similar prices. However, the features and add-ons may be different, like an upgraded sound system or a longer warranty period.

Sam's Club may promise to purchase some of these unique models in bulk, making it worthwhile for the manufacturer to add an extra feature. Ultimately, you have to spend a little more time looking at the specifications and features of each Sam's Club TV model to be sure you're receiving exactly what you want at the price you want.

Sam's Club can't fix the electronics products you buy there

Many consumers might not consider themselves to be tech savvy, meaning they'll likely rely more on tech support and technicians to help them with repairs or tricky installations. If you're familiar with Best Buy's troubleshooting and on-site tech help and setup services through the Geek Squad, you may naturally expect that most retailers that offer consumer electronics have similar services.

You can sometimes purchase installation services for consumer tech products through a separate, third-party professional while making a purchase at Sam's, but this service is more common for appliances or televisions. You might also be able to add a tech support plan from Allstate that includes repair options with certain TV, tablet, or computer purchases.

However, you can't take your product back to Sam's for convenient repairs like you can at Best Buy with Geek Squad. This could be a dealbreaker for consumers wanting easy access to repairs and services for their electronics.
