Sony is a massive name in the tech industry, owning various apps and services, including some you may not even have heard of, like Gaikai. This is thanks to the Japanese company's colossal size and its long-term mission to build consumer trust. Currently, Sony has around 94,900 employees worldwide, and a $143.48 billion USD market cap (data from September 2026). It was founded in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation), and today is publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, with no single controlling shareholder. The company is, however, led by a number of identifiable figures.

What is Sony known for?

Sony is a major player in consumer electronics, video games, and entertainment. The company has its fingers in many pies, and it's likely you've owned something from Sony at one point or other in your life. Its products and services include the PlayStation console for gaming; music, film, and television; consumer electronics, including TVs, headphones, earbuds, cameras, and imaging sensor technology. Also, Sony has its own smartphone brand, Sony Xperia, although it has stopped manufacturing these phones internally and has chosen to outsource them instead.

Arguably, Sony is most famous for consumer electronics, including the Walkman — first released in 1979 — and the PlayStation gaming console — first released in 1994. The PlayStation brand has had long and sustained success over the past 30 years, most recently with the PlayStation 5, which Sony announced that it has sold over 95 million units of, as of June 2026.
