Which Navigation App Is The Best For Walking?

There are several navigation apps that are commonly used to get around cities by car or public transport. However, they also feature maps for anyone who may want to walk to their destination while visiting a town or somewhere they've never been before. It's a handy tool to get around and is also included in Google Maps. So, after using it for driving, you can switch to the walking section to find the fastest route by foot to your final destination.

Google Maps via car may be able to get you to a building, but you won't always be able to park right outside of it. That's where the walking feature really comes into play. Once you park the car, you can switch the app to walking so it can guide you through paths designed for pedestrians. There are multiple navigation apps to choose from, but only one may be considered the best according to both Reddit users and critics: Google Maps. I even used it to navigate around GenCon and Indianapolis.

It includes the best and most direct path by foot and how long it'll take to reach the location. You can even change the route yourself to follow certain streets. It's just one way Google Maps makes walking easier. But it isn't the only map app for walking.

The best navigation app for walking trails

Getting around a city is one thing, but there are navigation apps that can help you get around outside of urban areas, too. The app AllTrails is one that's used to guide anyone who wants to get outdoors and explore trails in national parks, state parks, and similar areas.

It has more than 500,000 marked trails around the globe and includes their location, skill level, and photos showing what walkers can expect. You can even leave your own pictures to share with others to show off the trail and any beauty shots you may encounter. AllTrails also includes GPS driving directions to reach the trail, has points of interest such as historical locations and waterfalls, and can even track your walk, showing how far you went and how long it took.

Users who left reviews on the official AllTrails app page enjoy its ability to easily search for and find parks. However, while that may be easy to do, they say that unsubscribing from the premium edition can be difficult, as it isn't clear how to do so. The app is free, but the premium version comes with more features like being able to print maps and get live trail condition updates. You could use Google Maps to get around national parks, as well, but if you're tired of Google Maps, AllTrails is built specifically for off-road navigation.

The best navigation app for fitness walking

You can get your steps in using Google's navigation app or any of the Google Maps alternatives such as Map My Walk. The navigation app comes with a built-in walking tracker that traces your walk as you do so in real-time using GPS location. You can track your walk live and once you're through to see how far you went and how long it took you.

The app comes with several additional features all designed to help you get the most out of your walk. You'll be able to find detailed metrics tracking your pace, elevation, burned calories, and heart rate. It'll track your weight and show your progress as you work it off. You'll also be able to set a daily step counter so you can reach or exceed them.

Reviewers who've used Map My Walk say it does a decent job of tracking their walks, but to do so, the app must be open on your phone. That can use up more battery, as the app has to be left on to properly monitor your walk. Users also enjoy that the app comes with plenty of features to keep track of their walk, time, and location. It does come with a paid version, but they felt it wasn't necessary, as the free version is quite good.
