Why Do Some Hotel Mirrors Have Bluetooth?

While some older, less opulent hotel rooms seem stuck in a bygone era with their dated carpets and floral curtains, more modern establishments have managed to move with the times, installing upgrades like smart TVs, bedside touchscreen panels, and high-tech toilets. You might also spot a Bluetooth symbol on your hotel's bathroom mirror. 

Mirrors have been getting smarter for the last decade or so, and Bluetooth models are starting to appear in more hotel rooms. Connect it to your smartphone, and you'll be able to play music, podcasts, and any other audio content through the mirror's built-in Bluetooth speaker. If your hotel mirror includes this type of wireless speaker, you'll likely find the Bluetooth symbol near the bottom, in the center of the mirror.

Getting your phone to connect with the mirror is a simple process. Just tap the Bluetooth symbol on the mirror and then open your phone's Bluetooth settings to bring up a list of available devices. Look for the mirror, and tap it. Once paired, open your music library, podcast app, or radio player and start listening through your mirror. You'll notice that the mirror has no speaker grille, and that's because the speaker itself is located behind the glass. The audio may not be as good as you get from your own Bluetooth speaker or headphones, but it'll probably outperform the speaker on your smartphone.

Truth be told, a Bluetooth speaker embedded in a mirror is hardly cutting-edge technology these days. The latest smart mirrors, some of them still at the concept stage, feature displays, touch controls, cameras, voice assistants, smart lighting, and other technologies that could one day find their way into hotel mirrors.

On a future trip, that could mean the bathroom mirror may do a lot more than simply reflect your bleary-eyed morning face and amusing bed hair. You might also see things like hotel information, a weather report for the day ahead, the news headlines, and directions to local attractions, turning the bathroom into a place that goes well beyond the usual ablutions. 

Unveiled at CES 2025, Withings' Omnia concept mirror (pictured above) offers a glimpse of various features that could be coming your way, including health metrics and an AI voice assistant that offers personalized feedback — though admittedly health and fitness data may be the last thing you want to hear about on vacation. While you wait for the new technology to arrive, you can always pack some of these useful portable gadgets to give your hotel room a smart upgrade while you're there.

If your high-tech hotel mirror is able to place a speaker out of sight, what else could it be hiding? It's an unsettling thought, particularly when it comes to the familiar fear of concealed cameras. While it's true that hidden cameras are, very occasionally, uncovered by hotel guests, the concern is perhaps more often linked to private rentals and other independently operated accommodations. But even then, known cases are rare.

A mirror containing a Bluetooth speaker or more sophisticated smarts almost certainly won't have a secret camera pointing at you as well. The vast majority of reputable accommodation owners definitely do not want to put their personal or business reputation on the line, or run afoul of the law, by videoing you without your consent. There's a minor risk that a previous guest could've set up a camera in your accommodation, so if you're concerned, do a quick sweep as part of your room-entering ritual, along with your usual mattress bounce and minibar peek.

Begin with a visual scan of the place to see if there's anything that just doesn't feel right. Inspect things like clocks or ornaments positioned with a view of the room or bathroom, and if you're not happy, place them face down or put them in a cupboard until you leave. Also, check for small holes throughout the accommodation, and if you can, peer behind any mirrors. But don't start dismantling the room, as that could be dangerous if wiring is involved, and you may not be able to put things back together again. A quick check should put your mind at ease, and in the likely event that nothing shows up, you can happily get on with enjoying your stay.
