How Much Does Air Conditioning Drain Your EV's Battery?

A common concern among electric vehicle owners is calculating the driving range, even if you own a model on Consumer Reports' list of EVs that exceed their advertised range. Although some EVs inherently have a longer battery range than others, drivers should be mindful of how their driving habits impact the battery's discharge rate. Aside from driving style, your vehicle's climate control settings play a key factor in battery life, especially in extreme conditions per the EV information outlet Recurrent.

We already know that EV batteries drain faster in cold climates, but Recurrent's info also shows that your vehicle's climate control systems can, inevitably, affect its battery level. That said, the rate at which the A/C will drain the battery depends on how hot the temperature outside is. Warm, yet less severe, temperatures should only have a small effect on your battery's range, while extreme temperatures are more prone to having an adverse impact. In June 2025, Recurrent conducted research, which revealed that EVs typically only lose 5% of their battery charge in 90-degree weather due to A/C use, while the data also showed that EVs lose closer to 30% of their driving range when the temperature goes above 100 degrees.

"Up until it's over 90 degrees F, running the A/C will not drastically affect an EV's range, but operating in extreme temperatures can cause range loss," Recurrent said.

Cold weather and heaters have a greater effect on your battery

Air conditioners are a crucial feature for passenger comfort in hot weather, but EV owners should worry more about their heater usage when trying to conserve their battery range, according to Kelley Blue Book. Cold temperatures and EV heaters are capable of significantly draining your battery life, thus reducing your distance traveled between charge cycles. "Weather-related battery drain can be a serious issue for EV drivers in cold climates," Eric Brandt, the outlet's managing editor of Vehicle Reviews, said. A cold-weather study performed by Recurrent also backs this up, and it "shows that EV range can drop by up to 32% in freezing temperatures. This is important to keep in mind if you need the full range of your EV for it to be usable in everyday driving."

Prospective EV buyers living in colder climates needn't worry, however, as certain models including the Audi e-tron (Premium Plus) and the Tesla Model X stand out as the best models for winter and snow environments, according to experts. Such vehicles are equipped with heat pump technology and other features designed to prolong their battery range. Thus, they're the recommended options for those who anticipate traveling in frigid environments. Also, preconditioning — using the heat or A/C while the EV is charging — helps get the cabin to a more comfortable temperature before the vehicle has to rely on its battery to do this work.
