Bruce Campbell's 2005 Sci-Fi Murder Mystery Movie Is Streaming For Free

Everyone knows and loves Bruce Campbell for the "Evil Dead" movies and "Burn Notice." However, fans of the cult icon will go far and wide to track down his more obscure efforts — like "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.," a short-lived Western series that channeled "Indiana Jones." That said, only the actor's most die-hard fans will be familiar with "Man with the Screaming Brain," an obscure genre-mashing oddity that is currently streaming for free on Fandango and YouTube.

Not to be confused with the Roger Ebert-approved "The Man with Two Brains," Campbell's slapstick comedy — which he also co-wrote and directed — is a tale of mystery and murder. It tells the story of William Cole (Campbell), a pharmaceutical executive who must share a brain with a Russian cab driver (Vladimir Kolev). Despite their differences, they have one shared goal — to find the woman who killed them and caused this madness to begin with.

Don't go into "Man with the Screaming Brain" expecting one of the most scientifically accurate sci-fi movies. But if you enjoy weird Bruce Campbell movies — of which there are many — then look no further. Still, it's worth noting that "Man with the Screaming Brain" was blasted by critics.

"Man with the Screaming Brain" boasts an underwhelming 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and some critics were harsh toward Bruce Campbell's directorial effort. That said, many reviewers noted that the film's wackiness more than makes up for its issues.

"[The end] result is a comedy that doesn't build, lacks structural integrity, and often falls flat," Dennis Harvey wrote for Variety. "But it's also winningly loopy, with bizarre incidental ideas and performance riffing making for a series of parts that almost make up for the faults of the whole."

Johnny Butane of Dread Central echoed similar sentiments, but the critic was more complimentary overall, recommending it to people who understand Campbell's brand of oddball cinema. "The story is pretty ridiculous from start to finish, but that's not necessarily a bad thing since the film doesn't take itself seriously at all."

Campbell's movie isn't short on ideas. "Man with the Screaming Brain" is a strange bedfellows buddy comedy with mad science, Three Stooges-style humor, and plenty of mayhem thrown in for good measure. Now that it's streaming for free, Campbell fans owe it to themselves to check it out. You might be disappointed — or you might love it.
