AMD processors are great for gaming, and there are several generations to choose from. AMD makes some of the most powerful gaming processors on the market, but you may not need the fastest option if you're only playing specific games. There are budget, high-end, and mid-range options for every build out there.

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is one of the best gaming CPUs. If you're into the latest AAA games, its performance will be more than satisfactory, as it can even outpace more expensive alternatives from AMD. But it's not necessary if you're just playing games like "Counter-Strike 2" or "League of Legends," since they'll be able to run at high frame rates even on low-end systems.

Moving down to lower price points, the Ryzen 7 7700X is a solid mid-range contender that can handle most new games — just not as smoothly as the 9800X3D. If you just need a barebones CPU for casual gaming, there are budget options like the Ryzen 5 7600X, which still performs great in big multiplayer titles.

Best high-end AMD gaming CPU

While it's been topped by the most powerful desktop CPUs in workload-intensive tasks, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is still one of the best CPUs you can buy for gaming. It can handle absolutely anything you throw at it, allowing your computer to reach above triple-digit frame rates regardless of what you're playing. As long as you've got a really powerful graphics card, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the perfect pairing to go with it. At the time of writing, it'll set you back $479 at full price, but deals are becoming more common.

In demanding games like "Cyberpunk 2077," the 9800X3D can reach average frame rates of around 200 FPS at high 1080p settings. The same applies to "Star Wars Outlaws," which can easily reach over 150 FPS even at 4K with ultra settings. You'll even see benefits in less graphically-demanding games like "Counter-Strike 2" since those tend to be limited by CPU performance rather than GPU performance. At 1080p, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D squeezes nearly 700 FPS on average out of "Counter-Strike 2." The average FPS drops slightly when you bump the resolution to 4K, but the processor will still net over 600 FPS in that case.

Best budget AMD gaming CPUs

Even AMD's budget processors can still handle the latest AAA games as long as you're willing to make a few compromises. The Ryzen 5 7600X is the best of AMD's budget CPUs, and it has some impressive benchmarks for its relatively low price point. Looking at "Cyberpunk 2077," the Ryzen 5 7600X can easily manage a locked 120 FPS at 1080p with medium settings when paired with a decent mid-range graphics card. Not bad for a processor that only costs $219 at retail and regularly drops below that.

It's also great for multiplayer games if you just need a new CPU to jump into shooters with your friends. The Ryzen 5 7600X nets over 300 FPS on average in "Counter-Strike," and its 1% lows are still well above 200 FPS. That helps to avoid stutters, which are usually seen as a common problem with AMD processors. The processor can even handle more demanding shooters like "Rainbow Six Siege" with flying colors.

If you're looking for something between a budget-oriented pick and something high-end, the Ryzen 7 7700X is a great sweet spot between price and performance. Taking yet another look at "Cyberpunk 2077," the Ryzen 7 7700X pulls in an average of roughly 150 FPS at medium settings. With the settings raised higher and a high-end graphics card, the 7700X could still easily perform around the 60 FPS line even at 4K. It's a bit pricier, however, coming in at roughly $300 at most retailers.
