Steam Decks offer gamers the same luxury and portability of handheld, home console-caliber systems like the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but with the power of modern PCs fueling it and the entire Steam library at its disposal. To some, the console is the superior system to get your hands on in today's gaming economy, and some gamers have even chosen Steam Decks over laptops for portable gaming purposes. However, before purchasing your own Steam Deck, you may want to consider another, cheaper option you can access if you're an Android owner.

The DroidDeck app aims to give gamers the SteamOS treatment from the comfort and convenience of their Android devices. DroidDeck turns your Android into a handheld console capable of launching Steam and Steam titles with a SteamOS-esque interface. The app, similar to other Steam-like options on Android, allows you to download games from your Steam library onto your system. It also lets you download Linux apps and Steam Deck plugins.

Samsung devices compatible with DroidDeck include the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Galaxy S23 Ultra and S23+, and the S22 Ultra. Other devices falling under the Poco, OnePlus, Xiaomi, RedMagic, Asus, Sony, Motorola, and Nothing Phone banners can support the app. Thus, if you have any of these devices and are interested in enjoying PC gaming from the palm of your hand, DroidDeck makes for a great Steam Deck substitute.

DroidDeck is generating excitement despite its early flaws

The DroidDeck app's capabilities have made some gamers further question whether or not it's worth buying a Steam Deck in 2026. Some Reddit users expressed their excitement for the app, despite its early issues. There's hope it will one day rise to the occasion and match the promise of its premise. "The project really is impressive at this early stage," one Reddit user wrote. "Even the fact that it has the same issues as a completely separate operating system shows how well that Steam Linux environment is being replicated installed on top of Android."

Others, however, warned the convenience of accessing Steam from your Android in this capacity comes with the price of performance. One shouldn't expect to boot up games from their library without experiencing some form of delay. "I've tested only 'Hades 2' and 'Silksong,'" one Redditor reported. "Performance seems to be around 5-10% worse and there is a little bit more of an input lag, but I don't know by how much. It functions exactly like steam."

Another on Reddit, however, acknowledged the app's 0.3.1 update already started to improve its power. Thus, after working out some of the kinks, DroidDeck very well could rival the console it emulates on a more even playing field, and perhaps make people wonder why they bought their Steam Deck for almost $1,000.
