Apple's line of MacBooks come equipped to handle work, school, and fun all in several compact and portable devices. Today, you can find a few different MacBook models all with various features and functionality. It was a similar situation when the company announced three new laptops back in 2006. However, you were stuck paying more than $1,000 for a MacBook. Today, you have a few more options.

If you wanted a MacBook in 2006, the starting price for a brand new model began at around $1,099 for a 1.83 GHz laptop and $1,299 for either a black or white 2.0 GHz MacBook. In 2026, there is the MacBook Neo for between $699 and $799, the MacBook Air starting at around $1,299 and running up to $1,999, or the MacBook Pro which can cost anywhere between $1,999 and $4,999. If you're hunting for Apple laptops, you can check out the best MacBook for every budget.

Deciding what you plan on using your MacBook for can help you choose which model to get today. A Neo may be best for portability, daily work, and streaming shows or movies, whereas a MacBook Air and Pro are going to be more powerful due to their Apple M5 and M5 Pro and Max chips. But these also make them more expensive than models of the past.

What you get for the increased price

Aside from the MacBook Neo, the other two models from 2026 — the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro — are more expensive than the MacBooks released in 2006. The reason is that both premium series of laptops feature a better resolution, faster processor chips, and larger displays than what was available 10 years ago.

The MacBooks of 2006 all had the same size screens at 13-inches, had a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, and 512MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. The MacBook Air and Pro both have larger screens at 13 and 15-inches for the Air and 14 and 16-inches for the Pro. Both also offer increased resolution at 2880 x 1864 and 3456 x 2234, respectively.

The MacBooks of 2006 differed when it came to hard drives as the 1.83 GHz had a 60GB hard drive and the 2.0 GHz came with an 80GB hard drive. Modern MacBooks feature 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB SSDs. If you want a MacBook Air there are six models at varying price points and specs ranging from $1,299 to $1,999. MacBook Pros go between $1,999 and $4,999. And a lot has changed for the MacBook Pro in the last five years.

Why some prices have increased

It's easy to say that, because technology advanced since 2006, prices have gone up to match. However, it's more complicated when you consider the fact that modern tech also has larger displays, enhanced resolution, more RAM, and solid state hard drives. The addition and transition to solid state hard drives means you are going to spend more on a modern laptop. And that's not to mention the situation with RAM and how AI data centers are buying it up.

AI data centers cause laptops to skyrocket in price due to their need for more RAM to run the many computers inside the massive buildings. That RAM contains the same type of chip that is being used to build laptops, computers, and video game consoles. With RAM being bought up by AI data centers, the price is also increasing, making it more expensive for consumers and tech companies to buy it for their devices.

You will notice that Apple MacBooks also include Siri and AI integration as an assistant for users. This built-in service could also be driving up prices for laptops as AI requires more RAM, storage, and therefore more powerful chips. Even if you do not use AI, you will likely pay additional for a device that has it. However, if you don't want to spend a high price for a new MacBook, you can find refurbished models as well.
