Which AMD Graphics Card Is Equivalent To The NVIDIA RTX 5070?
The graphics card market has seen extreme shortages over the last year, and many gadgets have been jumping in price because of it. As such, many people are looking at alternatives for the graphics cards they've been eyeing. The RTX 5070 is an incredibly popular GPU, for example, but there are AMD cards that match or even beat its performance at the same price. The closest AMD equivalent to Nvidia's RTX 5070 is the Radeon RX 9070. Both have an MSRP of $549, and they trade blows in benchmarks for AAA games like "Resident Evil Requiem" and "Cyberpunk 2077."
With the GPU market's volatility, however, it's not a fair comparison to make. It's difficult to find GPUs at MSRP these days, and the RTX 5070 can easily reach prices upwards of $1,000. That price point puts it in competition with more powerful AMD cards like the Radeon RX 9070 XT, which outperforms the RTX 5070 considerably in most games.
Radeon RX 9070 vs RTX 5070
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 is the closest equivalent to Nvidia's RTX 5070, and each card achieves similar results in most situations. If you're looking to push high framerates at 1440p or game at 4K with the help of upscaling and frame generation, either GPU will work in your rig. Looking at "Red Dead Redemption 2," the RX 9070 averages 127 FPS at 1440p with Ultra settings (as tested by Linus Tech Tips). The RTX 5070 gets a respectable 115 FPS average. In "Cyberpunk 2077" on the Ultra preset at native 1440p with ray tracing enabled, the RX 9070 averages 42 FPS while the RTX 5070 has an average of 46 FPS.
There are some situations where AMD beats Nvidia, however. In "Crimson Desert," the RX 9070 pulls in an average of 84 FPS at 1440p without FSR upscaling or frame generation (as tested by Jegs TV). The RTX 5070 averages just 68 FPS under those same conditions. This also applies to 4K resolution, with AMD's 51 FPS average beating Nvidia's 36 FPS.
The 9070 XT takes things even further
AMD's RX 9070 XT is positioned as a competitor to Nvidia's upgraded RTX 5070 Ti, but the current hardware market changes things. The base RTX 5070 has an MSRP of $549, but you'll have a tough time finding it anywhere at that price. The cheapest available RTX 5070 cards hover around $900, but you can easily find a much faster RX 9070 XT for the same cost.
The 9070 XT is a significant upgrade over the RTX 5070 is every regard. In "Ark: Survival Ascended," at Medium settings, the RX 9070 XT averages 51 FPS with a 1% low of 43 FPS (as reported by Hardware Unboxed). The RTX 5070 averages only 35 FPS, so even the absolute lowest peak of the 9070 XT's benchmark surpasses the 5070's average frame rate. You'll also see similar patterns in newer games like "Resident Evil Requiem." At 1440p with maxed out settings and ray tracing set to High, the RX 9070 XT averages 153 FPS with a 1% low of 118 FPS. On the RTX 5070, the average is 121 FPS with 1% lows dropping to 96 FPS.
Both GPUs are being sold for roughly the same price at the time of writing. With that in mind, you can essentially get a graphics card as good as the RTX 5070 Ti for the same price as a base RTX 5070 — if you're willing to deal with the disadvantages of buying an AMD GPU instead of Nvidia.
