ONN Dash Cams Are Affordable, But How Well Do They Work?

Walmart's in-house brand — Onn — known for a wide range of affordable gadgets and accessories has a couple of dash cams in its portfolio. These dash cams, like the brand's other offerings, are relatively inexpensive. While you can get the Onn Full HD 1080p Dash Cam for just $30, the 1080p Dash Cam Front and Rear Set costs only $50. Moreover, in this era of flash storage prices hitting sky-high, Onn actually bundles a microSD card with both models for no extra cost, essentially giving you a gadget that works out of the box.
To give you some context for this pricing, the 70mai M310, which is one of the dash cams well-liked by Amazon shoppers, costs $46 at list price for just its front unit and without any included microSD card. That said, it has a slightly higher 1296p resolution. This affordable pricing certainly makes both Onn dash cam models pretty enticing, but what do these dash cams bring to the table, and are they actually good?
What do Onn dash cams offer?
As mentioned, Onn offers two dash camera models. Both are largely similar, except for a couple of notable differences. For example, both dash cams have a 1,920 x 1,080p resolution, as indicated by their names, and feature a 2-inch display for viewing the camera feed and interacting with it. The two also feature a G Sensor to detect any collision incidents to save video recordings, support a microSD card with a capacity of up to 32 GB, and use a suction cup for mounting on the car windshield.
However, the Onn 1080p Dash Cam has a 130-degree field of view, whereas the 1080p Dash Cam Front and Rear Set has a 140-degree field of view. This affects how much of the road and surrounding area the camera captures. Another difference between the two models is that the 1080p Dash Cam Front and Rear Set includes an additional rear camera to capture what's happening behind your car. Unlike the front camera, the rear camera attaches using an adhesive pad that's also fixed to the camera.
What are buyers saying about Onn dash cams?
Onn's dash cameras have received mixed reviews from Walmart shoppers. Buyers have rated the 1080p Dash Cam at 3.8 out of 5 and the 1080p Dash Cam Front and Rear Set at 4.2 out of 5. The incentivized buyer reviews of the 1080p Dash Cam are largely positive, and shoppers say the dash cam is easy to use, offers good video quality, and has a compact design. However, the folks who received no incentive to review it don't have such flattering opinions. One buyer says the camera overheats and stops working in hotter climates, such as in Arizona, whereas another buyer complained about the bundled microSD card, which didn't work for them. The dash cam itself stopped working for another shopper. The sole positive feedback from a non-incentivized buyer was about the camera's affordability.
The 1080p Dash Cam Front and Rear Set has only received incentivized reviews, which are mostly positive, with buyers claiming the picture quality is clear and the mounting mechanism works well. That said, a couple of buyers note that the dash cam didn't work for them at all, or they had issues with sticking the rear camera.
For those who are unaware, incentivized reviews are essentially feedback from buyers who were either paid for writing the review or received the product for free, making them not the most unbiased sources of information. Unfortunately, Onn dash cams aren't widely reviewed, with barely any feedback from experts or actual buyers. If you're looking for well-rated options from unbiased experts, there are four dash cams recommended by Consumer Reports that you can consider.
