Anthony Mackie And Morena Baccarin's 92-Minute Sci-Fi Action Movie Is An Underrated Watch
Anthony Mackie and Morena Baccarin are known for their adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But did you know that they also starred in an underrated "A Quiet Place" knockoff? In George Nolfi's "Elevation," they play characters who are forced to contend with monsters that track humans by the carbon dioxide they exhale. The creatures cannot rise above 8,000 feet, so humanity's survivors hang out in the mountains to avoid them.
"Elevation" is also reminiscent of another movie Baccarin fans will be familiar with — "Greenland." Baccarin and Gerard Butler's sci-fi movie is about parents who must get medicine for their son as the world goes to hell around them. Meanwhile, "Elevation" sees Mackie's character embark on a trek to get replacement filters for his son's oxygen machine, bringing him into contact with the monsters. Baccarin plays a scientist who joins him on the quest, as she wants to kill the creatures once and for all.
No one should go into "Elevation" expecting one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. Nolfi's film is too derivative of other flicks to stand out — but that isn't strictly a bad thing. Fans of post-apocalyptic monster movies will likely have fun with "Elevation," so why should folks check it out?
What sci-fi fans said about Elevation
Critics and regular viewers disagree on whether "Elevation" is a must-see movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts 54% and 80% scores, respectively, so it's clear that the audience enjoyed it more than the reviewers. However, 54% isn't a terrible score for a film that's only let down by the fact that it's similar to other movies.
"I really enjoyed Elevation and honestly don't get the harsh critic reviews," one fan wrote. "While there are a few minor narrative hiccups, the movie is incredibly entertaining and keeps you glued to the screen the entire time."
"Good movie with good acting," another viewer observed. "I liked the plot and there should be a sequel to answer the biggest question: where the Reapers came from."
"Elevation" sets up a potential sequel that could answer that question, but only time will tell if it ever comes to fruition. That said, viewers who want to check out the film can stream it on Hulu. Who knows, maybe some higher streaming numbers would help push a follow-up forward.
