Gaming phones can be a worthwhile purchase for people who like to play while traveling, but their limited libraries and components can be limiting. Sure, you can play "Genshin Impact" on your iPhone, but titles like "Grand Theft Auto V" are unavailable. Through official channels, that is. You can play it on your iPhone if you're willing to jump through a few hoops.

While Rockstar's modern classic is officially unavailable on mobile platforms, modders have developed their own port of "GTA V" that runs on iPhones. How? This version runs on a WebAssembly build designed for browsers and uses Apple's proprietary, hardware-accelerated graphics engine, Metal API. No streaming or cloud services needed.

Because this "port" is unofficial, you can't download it from the Apple App Store. Instead, the game is split into two parts: The IPA file (the format used to install apps on Apple devices) and the actual game files. To play "GTA V" on your Apple device, you will need to supply your own files. We recommend buying an old physical copy of the game (you can find Xbox 360 copies for dirt cheap) and digitizing the game with a Blu-ray player and special game preservation software.

How to install GTA V

Once you have everything ready, you can begin the process by plugging your iPhone into a computer and downloading both the IPA and the GTA game data onto it. Next, install a sideloading program like iLoader. Make sure to download the correct version for your PC or MacBook. Once the program finishes installing, start it and sync iLoader with your Apple ID. Now you're ready to begin in earnest:

  1. Select your connected iPhone (you may need to click "Refresh" to load it into the list).
  2. Click "Import IPA."
  3. Select the file path where the IPA file is located and click "Open."
  4. Wait for the program to install the "GTA V" port onto your iPhone.
  5. Click "Dismiss."
  6. Move the game data to the iPhone, preferably via AirDrop.

Congratulations, your mobile device should now have a port of "GTA V." But before you can start playing, you need to change a few settings to make the game function properly:

  1. Open the "Settings" menu.
  2. Tap on "General."
  3. Select "VPN & Device Management."
  4. Grant permission to the game app.
  5. Go back to the main Settings menu and select "Privacy & Security."
  6. Select "Developer Mode."
  7. Toggle the option to "On," and restart your phone.
  8. After your phone restarts, swipe up and tap "Enable."

Now you're ready to open the unofficial "GTA V" port. But there's one more step: Make the app recognize your game files. If you transferred the data to your phone, simply tap 'Add your game files," followed by "Choose an archive" under the "From an archive in Files" tab. Find the game file, wait for it to unpack, and you can finally play "GTA V" on your iPhone.

Not the best way to play.

The fact that modders got "GTA V" running on an iPhone is nothing short of black magic. However, if we can be blunt for a moment, this version of the game has some noteworthy issues that could get in the way of your enjoyment. And we don't just mean that the controls rely on virtual buttons that take up valuable screen real estate and block crucial on-screen elements like the map.

Long story short, the iPhone was never built to run games like "GTA V," and the port shows why. Your phone is bound to heat up rapidly trying to run the port, no matter what model you use. Plus, your iPhone's RAM will act as an insurmountable bottleneck. Even if your device's processor is up to the task of rendering the game world at reasonable framerates, textures will generally look blurred or muddy, and the problems will only escalate the higher you push resolution and the older your phone.

Are we impressed by the "GTA V" iPhone port? Definitely. Would we recommend it? Probably not. If you really want to play the game on the go, purchase the Steam version and play it on a Steam Deck. Sure, you will probably get better performance on a dedicated gaming PC, but true portability is one of the Steam Deck's advantages over laptops.
