Here's What That Clock Symbol On Claude Actually Means

Anthropic Claude uses a few codes and symbols to represent specific functions in different applications. One of the more confusing ones is the various clock icons you can find in Claude browser extensions, agentic developer workflows, or in the regular Claude app. Essentially, the clock symbol on Claude can mean one of the following: session history, scheduled tasks, or extended thinking. The first, session history, refers to the clock symbol used as a button in the Claude Code app, or extension for VS Code. The button is at the top of the panel and shows a clock with a counterclockwise arrow. Selecting it resumes previous conversations by opening a conversation history, or searching for a specific one using the built-in tool.

The clock symbol can also refer to the scheduled tasks option in the Claude in Chrome extension; when you open the extension panel, you'll see a clock icon in the upper right corner. This button lets you set recurring browser tasks for Claude to handle at a selected interval.

Lastly, extended thinking is the clock icon with a plus symbol on it that you can find below the prompt window in a Claude chat. Selecting it forces the AI to take extra time to consider your prompt before spitting out an answer; you generally use this feature for more complex problems that may require intermediary analysis to understand or solve. Extended thinking doesn't switch to another model, but rather acts like a mode you can toggle on and off using the clock icon.

Because the clock symbol means different things depending on the Claude application you are using, it can be confusing. It's also unlikely you'll see multiple clock symbols at the same time.

For example, many users may see only the clock icon for extended thinking or scheduled tasks. That's mainly because Claude Code targets tech-savvy users, since it's an agentic coding tool — think of it as a utility-based resource meant to work alongside your coding projects. It isn't available to all users, since you need a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console API key to access it, even if you only want to use it for vibe coding.

Extended thinking in Claude is also model-specific, which you can change in the regular chat if you have a subscription. Claude for Chrome is only for paid users, meaning you won't see the scheduled tasks feature if you haven't opted into a plan or installed and activated the extension on your browser. Essentially, unless you are both a paid and power user, you won't see all three clock symbols on the platform.
