The iPhone Duo Might Not Support Your Old MagSafe Accessories — Here's Why
The new iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable phone, is one of the most talked-about tech gadgets so far this year. While Apple might be late to the foldables party, the company is entering the space with a compelling foldable phone that employs a sleek and compact design with exciting features that are convincing fans to return to Apple. There are cool features exclusive to the iPhone Duo, like an under-display FaceTime camera, Apple Pencil support (coming soon), and a unique split-screen setup. One feature it also has which is popular with the latest iPhones and some Android devices is support for MagSafe accessories via integrated Qi2 magnets. But there's a catch, and it's a pretty obvious one if you simply eyeball the device.
The iPhone Duo may not support all of your existing or new MagSafe accessories, and that's mainly because of its compact, passport-style size. This hasn't really been an issue with the similarly sized Galaxy Z Fold 8 since Samsung does not offer built-in MagSafe magnetic alignment. Samsung's foldable can work with MagSafe accessories when paired with a compatible case, but owners mostly focus on connecting things like small charging pucks, car docks, stands, and ring grips like Popsockets. All of these should work with the iPhone Duo, too. But while some other specific accessories might technically work in the sense that they'll magnetically attach, they simply won't fit.
The MagSafe wallet issue with Apple's new iPhone Duo
One of the most common issues you'll run into is with MagSafe wallets. These fit under the camera island and usually reach close to the bottom of the phone or its case. But since the iPhone Duo has a shorter and wider design, most existing MagSafe wallets won't fit properly. They will either hang down below the MagSafe ring or, more likely, not secure since you can't properly align them.
Just make smaller MagSafe wallets, right? That may not be easy because they need to be the right size to hold credit cards. The iPhone Duo is 4.61 inches tall (including the camera island) and 3.31 inches wide. A standard credit card, driver's license, or other common card like a digital room key is typically about 3.37 inches wide. This will make it a bit tough to fit lengthwise, especially considering the wallet needs an extra quarter of an inch or so in height and width to accommodate the cards inside. However, accessories brand Moft is launching a wallet case for the iPhone Duo (shown above), so it is doable — but as you can see, the tolerances are tiny and may not leave enough room for a traditional wallet design.
Apple indirectly confirms these limitations with its own official list of approved MagSafe wallets, which does not include the iPhone Duo as a compatible phone model (but does include the iPhone 18 and 18 Pro Max). This may encourage owners to focus more on virtual cards in Apple Wallet. In some states, you can even store personal IDs like your driver's license and even a digital passport there, too. With an iPhone Duo, that might be your only option unless you bring your physical cards with you.
Battery banks and other accessories
While you shouldn't run into issues with accessories like stands and ring grips or even tripods, some portable wireless battery packs will also pose an issue. The best wireless power banks are usually bar-shaped and fit under the camera island, so most existing options will extend beyond the bottom of this phone and won't secure properly. Thankfully, you can find several square-shaped magnetic power banks on the market today, and we're already seeing evidence of companies developing new ones employing square-shaped designs to accommodate this new phone. If you plan on getting a square-shaped wireless power bank, make sure to verify its measurements to ensure it will fit. Alternatively, you can continue to use larger MagSafe chargers you already have for wired charging if they have built-in cables or charging ports as a secondary charging option.
So, if you have a MagSafe wallet, you may have to retire it for now and either focus on your digital Apple Wallet or find a replacement accessory with a Duo-first design like the one from Moft above. MagSafe grips, stands, rings, and other accessories like foldable desktop and car chargers should still work with proper positioning on the iPhone Duo. But larger bar-shaped portable wireless charging banks will become wired ones for now until you can invest in something new.
