While worrying about your PC setup, there are several components at play that you'll eventually have to fork over some dough to replace. The GPU, RAM, monitors, and more are among some of the most crucial parts owners have on their minds on the daily. Even accessories like keyboards, webcams, and speakers are important. One piece of equipment that may fall under some PC users' radar, and thus not be worried about too much, is their wired mouse, which still plays a pivotal role in operating the system with ease, while offering a wide array of functions you might not have known it could do.

While you still must face the inevitable and swap your clicker out for a new one someday, you'd be surprised how long such accessories can actually last. Gaming mouse users say their devices have lasted between two and five years; Reddit users with higher-end products reported maximum lifespans up to eight years. Some Quora users further backed the former claim when concerning average computer mice. However, some argued better-quality pointers could last some time between five and 10 years. One person went so far as to say their mouse lasted for decades. This does, however, depend on the accessory's usage rate and mechanical wear and tear over that timeframe.

Several factors determine your mouse's lifespan

Your PC mouse's lifespan ultimately hinges on several factors consistently at play. The material quality of its external shell can have a major impact on protecting its internal components from inevitable yet harmful elements like sweat and grip pressure. One's click rate is also a major determining factor. For example, the tech accessory brand Omoton estimates average mice last between 20 million and 50 million clicks.

It advises avoiding any product that produces a lower rate. "If you encounter a mouse that has, for example, a lifespan of just 5 million clicks, do yourself a favor: run (unless quality doesn't mean anything to you)," it said. Signs that a mouse is approaching its final day include an inaccurate sensor, wear underneath the buttons, and a fraying or bent cable, which may damage wires within. There are ways, however, you can increase its overall lifespan.

Attack Shark recommends routinely clearing dust and debris from your device via cotton swabs with alcohol, soft cloths, or compressed air. Using mousepads with smooth, even surfaces can also reduce friction, thus sparing the mouse's sensor each time it moves across it, and perhaps make it feel quicker. PC owners will, one day, have to face the inevitable and upgrade their mouse. However, these simple measures may spare you from frequently putting your mice to rest.
