Console prices are getting pretty expensive, and that doesn't seem like a trend that's ending anytime soon. What's more surprising is how much more each system has cost historically, especially in Sony's console lineup. Though if you take inflation into account, the value is closing in on how much you'd pay for a regular PlayStation 5 console in 2026. The PlayStation 1, released in September 1995 for North America, launched at $300 and was eventually slashed to $200 in May 1996.
Adjusted for inflation using August 2026 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics calculator, the launch price becomes $655.97 based on its 1995 pricing, and after the first cut, it was $427.82. By comparison, the PlayStation 5 has also shifted a little; the console is well into its lifespan, and the PlayStation 6 is potentially around the corner. The 2020 launch price for a base PlayStation 5 Disc edition is $500 ($400 for the Digital edition). After inflation, those numbers rise to $643.50 and $514.80, respectively. For reference, Best Buy sells the PlayStation 5 Disc edition (slim, 1TB) for $650, while the Digital edition is $600 since Sony adjusted the pricing in April 2026.
The toughest comparison is between the cost of the PlayStation 5 Pro and the PlayStation 1. Sony didn't release extra premium versions of the PlayStation 1 as it did with the PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 5 Pro. So the high price of the PlayStation 5 Pro in 2026 is expected; the console launched at $700, then rose to $900 after a price hike — which is much higher after accounting for inflation, as the initial price would be around $743.24.
How much is a PlayStation 1 worth today?
The PlayStation 1 is still considered a collector's item, given its age and how long ago Sony stopped manufacturing this over-20-year-old console. Unless you are trying to get an unopened PlayStation 1 with the original retail box, securing one isn't as painful. Retro vGames sells used PlayStation 1 consoles for $216 to $260 at regular prices. On eBay, it is even cheaper — if you are lucky, you can get one for under $100. It's more about which seller you buy from and the shipping cost, since there isn't always a printed guarantee that these consoles are fully functional and have been tested.
In cases like that, it's best to read the return policy before you buy, in case the product you receive isn't what's being advertised. While the PlayStation 1 console has aged since its 1995 release, it has undergone a few model revisions throughout its life cycle. So it's not too unexpected that you can secure a PlayStation 1 without breaking the bank. Similarly, other retro consoles can be purchased cheaply, under $150, if you aren't particularly picky about the model revision and condition.
