Android Auto Just Got A Big New Update Drivers Should Know About
It was only a matter of time before Gemini learned how to navigate and entertain you while you're focused on the road. Google has unveiled that Android Auto, the popular infotainment platform compatible with numerous cars, trucks, and other types of vehicles, will receive AI-assistance via Gemini's Personal Intelligence. This major update dropped on October 20 and affects both Android Auto users and Google built-in vehicles.
How this all works is rather fascinating: Once granted permission, Gemini can access many of the Google apps you probably use all the time, including Workspace, Google Maps, YouTube, etc. This allows the digital companion to reference everything from emails and photos to previously visited destinations. When you're driving, this will allow you to ask things like, "What time does the movie start?" and, "What's the traffic like on the way to the theater?" without needing to provide additional context (like which movie theater you routinely go to).
According to Google, user privacy is paramount for vehicular Gemini, and no Google app is tied into your infotainment until you say it's okay. Cars with Google built-in only provide personalized responses when you're in the car and your phone is paired. You can also change your Gemini privacy settings at any time.
Personalized responses for more convenient and safer road journeys
Google account owners must be 18 years or older to use Personal Intelligence, but as AI is a technology that continues to rapidly develop, we're pretty sure it's not going anywhere. So, it stands to reason that Gemini will only improve and be available to more users over time.
Apple CarPlay — the forever foe of Android Auto and cars with Google built-in — and the more advanced CarPlay Ultra can use Siri AI; that said, certain features and settings may not be supported, as the Apple Intelligence tech is still in its beta stage. You'll also need to be using an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and the device needs to be running iOS 27. At this time, Siri AI isn't being offered to EU or mainland China users.
The name of the game is keeping our eyes on the road, and tools like Gemini's Personal Intelligence may help us to do just that, by taking care of other tasks and questions that spring to mind.
