5 Avengers: Doomsday Rumors We Hope Turn Out To Be True
"Avengers: Doomsday" has high expectations to live up to when it arrives in December this year. Its biggest challenge is undoubtedly reaching the same level as the last box-office-breaking team-up movie we got way back in 2019: "Avengers: Endgame" (now with extra goodies courtesy of "Avengers: Endgame – Encore"). The last time we had this many main MCU characters on screen together, Robert Downey Jr. seemingly called it a day with the franchise he helped build. Now he's back to wreck the joint as Doctor Victor Werner von Doom in the new movie. Since the announcement, fandom fires have kept burning, fueled by endless, occasionally awesome rumors online.
As with any movie of this magnitude, online scoopers have caught wind of significant plot points or character appearances that may or may not be on the horizon, and if there's any truth to them, eager MCU lovers have every right to get excited about what's in store. We're not ones to stir the pot, but heck, we're fans too. Even with everything we know about "Avengers: Doomsday," a specific set of potential spoilers still has us holding out hope that, if true, the film could deliver some genuinely astounding plot points. Here are five potential rumors that we hope genuinely come to pass and get us as excited in the theaters as when we saw an elderly war veteran throw a hammer at an alien.
Deadpool and Wolverine will team up with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man...and maybe more
Even after that painfully dull cast reveal for "Avengers: Doomsday," we knew that the guest list wasn't complete, and we were right. Chris Evans was later revealed to be reprising his role as Steve Rogers as part of a trio of teaser trailers that were released, leaving fans guessing that plenty more could drop in to either help save or ruin the day. That top-secret ensemble includes a bunch of heroes who have already jumped between realities, most of whom were throwing superhero punches before Robert Downey Jr. even put on his armor.
Online whispers suggest the film will both start and end with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) jumping across universes and initially crossing paths with Peter 2 (Tobey Maguire), aka the Spider-Man last seen waving off Peter 3 in "Spider-Man: No Way Home." According to renowned scooper MyTimeToShineHello, the first meeting will follow the standard superhero route: the Merc with the Mouth and Logan will battle Spider-Man because their worlds are on a collision course. Rumors also suggest they will all return at the end of the movie's cliffhanger as a ragtag team of heroes, including Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield's respective Spider-Men.
Reynolds' return as Deadpool shouldn't surprise anyone, given that he crashed Marvel Studios' Hall H in costume at this year's Comic-Con. However, the Spider-Men reuniting with him and his permanently grumpy buddy should deliver an extra-special nostalgic dopamine hit, hopefully causing a decent amount of trouble for Doom when "Avengers: Secret Wars" arrives next year.
The Young Avengers will finally assemble
There's no disputing that enough post-"Endgame" plot threads need tying up, or at least addressing to some degree, by the time Doom rolls around. One such story beat audiences would be forgiven for forgetting is the post-credit scene of "The Marvels," where Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) offers Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) a spot on the Young Avengers, who, at that point, are their only members. Well, according to MyTimeToShineHello, younger MCU heroes will play a part in "Doomsday" that could bleed into "Avengers: Secret Wars."
Following a report from the scooper, "The Champions/Young Avengers will be in both Doomsday and Secret Wars to tease their show that will be set post-Secret Wars." They followed up months later, saying they will survive the impending incursion and search for one powerful figure to set things right (more on that later).
For the uninitiated, the Young Avengers roster has previously included Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop, as well as Billy and Tommy Maximoff (Joe Locke from "Agatha All Along" and current "VisionQuest" star Ruaridh Mollica) and Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne, aka "Ironheart"). Admittedly, while there's no solid confirmation that they're starring in "Doomsday," we shouldn't forget that all of those mentioned, except Williams, appeared in concept art that was thought to be leaked (via GamesRadar+), only for the Russo Brothers to quickly deny it. Either way, by the end of "Avengers: Doomsday," the MCU will need all the help it can get, and if that's the case, then, well, the kids are alright.
Avengers: Doomsday will end with Doom as the ruler of Battleworld
The next big rumor on the list is pretty much confirmed, but we still can't wait to see it. Just as Thanos sent the Avengers packing in "Infinity War," Victor will win by the end of "Doomsday," and we already know how bad things will look when he gets there. Just last week, 2015 "Secret Wars" writer Jonathan Hickman told Bleeding Cool that he's been a consultant on the upcoming films, suggesting that the incursions and Doom's master plan will mirror that Marvel event. In Hickman's "Secret Wars," the major turning point sees Victor create a new realm called Battleworld, where a pocket of heroes fights back to fix things. It all but confirmed then that "Doomsday" will end with the Latverian leader sitting on a throne after giving our heroes a pasting and setting up "Avengers: Secret Wars" to pull some truly wild plot beats from Hickman's story.
It might sound very similar to the shift between "Infinity War" and "Endgame," with the heroes licking their wounds before going back for another round. The difference, however, is that the transition from "Doomsday" to "Secret Wars" will open the door to truly otherworldly, reality-rattling events that could see characters switch sides and undergo immense transformations that leave them looking totally different from what we're familiar with. It's a daring venture, but for a film following the most successful movie of all time, we need exactly that.
Wanda Maximoff will return in Avengers: Doomsday
As "VisionQuest" continues to round up the WandaVision trilogy, it feels fitting that the woman who started it all makes a reappearance in "Avengers: Doomsday", and if rumors are true, that's exactly what we're getting. After the reveal of an apparent coven of magic wielders working under Doom was shown at San Diego Comic-Con, it makes sense that one of the most powerful spellcasters will also make an appearance — she just might not be on the right side.
According to yet another rumor from MyTimetoShineHello, Wanda will live in Doom's castle and command her own army. At the same time, the equally unconfirmed Young Avengers will look for her, hoping she can help turn the tide against Doom's tyrannical rule. This plot point will feel familiar to comic book fans, as it echoes "Avengers: The Children's Crusade," which saw the young heroes, led by Wiccan and Speed, track down Wanda. Unfortunately, when they finally find the Scarlet Witch, she's engaged to Doctor Doom.
It's nothing new for the MCU to pull from various comic book stories and weave them into its own, and given the recent events of both "VisionQuest" and "Agatha All Along," rebuilding the Maximoff family would make for a great plot thread to tie up nicely. This, of course, depends on Wanda's mood and where her allegiance lies in "Avengers: Doomsday" and into "Avengers: Secret Wars," since she might not be the only one switching sides.
Doom will turn heroes into villains by the end of Avengers: Doomsday
As mentioned, with "Avengers: Secret Wars" likely drawing from Hickman's comic event of the same name, a handful of heroes might forget their past and live in a future devoted to Doom. In the original comic series, Victor ruled Battleworld with Marvel legends at his side, keeping the new realm in order. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) leads the Thor Corps, a peacekeeping force that monitors Battleworld, and reports to Sheriff Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Battleworld itself is also made up of 41 domains, each ruled by a different Marvel character. Everyone from Khonshu to Shang-Chi, and even Spider-Man, has their own patch of land to keep in check, though the film will likely have to minimize those details and, with it, the number of domains. This would explain why one rumor is doing the rounds, along with potentially leaked concept art reveals that Gambit (Channing Tatum), Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Vision (Paul Bettany), and Clea (Charlize Theron) are all on Doom's side, with Stephen Strange as the Baron of Battleworld.
Additionally, it was also rumored that Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) and Franklin are Doom's new wife and child, just as in the original comic. Mixing things up to this level would make for a compelling cliffhanger, with heroes changing teams instead of being snapped out of existence. Of course, like this and every other juicy rumor, we'll have to wait and see which one rings true when "Avengers: Doomsday" finally arrives in theaters on December 18.
