If you thought your Sony Walkman from the '70s was already quite valuable, just wait until you see what Sony has up its sleeve next. Though the audio players of yesteryears have now transformed into something with a more modern edge, Sony's recent developments seem to be focused on revitalizing the brand. While those familiar with the Walkmans of the past are sure to be excited, they may not be as excited when they see the price on some of these devices.

Spotted by TechRadar, Sony's latest NW-WM1AM3 and NW-WM1ZM3 digital audio players were announced in mid-October 2026. TechRadar reports the $2,999 AM3 model is set for release on November 27, 2026, whereas the ZM3 with its astounding $5,899 price tag is already available, but has sold out online. The products feature 5.5-inch screens, Sony DSD Remastering, dual headphone jacks, 128 GB and 256 GB of storage, respectively (both expandable), and 35 hours of listening. However, the more expensive ZM3 model also includes gold-plated screws and wiring, oxygen-free copper, and other high-end materials.

Additionally, Sony has been teasing a new product across its social media channels, with an Instagram post hinting at an announcement on November 5, 2026. Users are anticipating that the company might announce new Walkman on-ear headphones. Considering wired headphones seemingly refuse to go extinct, there's no doubt some are excited for Sony's announcement, even if the digital audio players they accompany now have eye-watering prices. Nonetheless, it seems Sony is beginning another chapter for its iconic devices that now have more than a 40-year history.

Are Sony Walkmans still available?

The Sony Walkman was responsible for helping the '80s be just a little cooler, as the line first got its start in 1979 with the release of the Sony Walkman TPS-L2. Originally, the devices focused on cassettes, with models like WM-2 being some of the smallest stereo cassette players a customer could buy at the time. Sony Walkmans still exist today, and not just the models Sony has recently announced.

Along with the AM3 and the ZM3, Sony's modern Walkman lineup also includes the NW-WM1AM2, which features high-resolution audio support, 128 GB of storage with options for expandable memory, an S-Master HX digital amplifier, and even native direct stream digital support. It has an MSRP of $1,399, but it's sold out on Sony's website at the time of this writing. While also unavailable directly through Sony, another current Walkman model is the NW-WM1ZM2, which also includes Hi-Res support, 256 GB of storage, crystal oscillators, and more.

What will be really interesting to see is how Sony will handle a new pair of Walkman headphones should they see the light of day. Considering the original MDR-3 headphones for Walkman first released back in 1979, it'll be interesting to see how much their slim design and retro looks will translate to the modern era. Nonetheless, for those having a renewed interest in retro style products, Sony's offerings may just satisfy that itch. If you can afford them, that is.
