Consumers who gravitate toward physical media, yet lack experience with Blu-Ray, may question whether a player is worth the investment, or if they'd be able to watch previously purchased DVDs on it. Thankfully, your prized DVD collection is cleared to be enjoyed on a Blu-Ray player without any hassle. 

Blu-Ray players are capable of playing DVDs due to built-in support for the format, and are compatible with a variety of formats, ranging from rewritable to standard discs. This is because of Blu-Ray's dual-laser technology, which allows it to read Blu-Ray discs with a blue-violet laser capable of scanning denser data, and lesser formats like DVDs and CDs via red laser. 

Even if your library consists mostly of standard definition discs, Blu-Ray players are equipped with technology designed to maximize the viewing experience of your DVD content. One non-negotiable feature when buying a Blu-Ray player is its ability to upscale standard definition DVDs to a higher resolution. Not only will you be able to watch your favorite DVD movies without fear of them growing obsolete because of Blu-Ray, you can enjoy higher quality visuals than you may have thought possible.

While you're free to pop a DVD into your Blu-Ray player without any problems, the same can't be said for the reverse. It's ill-advised for any DVD player owner to buy Blu-Ray discs, as they lack the necessary support to work properly. So, while you still may be able to enjoy your DVD movies on Blu-Ray players, HD DVDs are unfortunately left in the dust if you no longer own the corresponding device.
