Who can deny the rich colors and inky black levels of an LG OLED TV? Now that the manufacturer has switched to Tandem panels, even LED-LCD devotees are going to have a tough time arguing that OLEDs don't get bright enough. Beyond the visuals and under the hood, LG TVs are powered by the webOS smart TV platform. This is the software that lets you stream Netflix, cast content from your phone, control smart home devices, and more. Using webOS feels intuitive and customizable, but you may be wondering how long your LG TV will receive software updates.

Fortunately, the answer is a good one: five years. If you purchased an LG TV in 2022 or later, the manufacturer promises up to four major webOS updates. This is actually part of an initiative called LG Re:New, which kicked off in early 2024. Whether you purchased an LG OLED or Mini LED doesn't matter; as long as the TV has webOS, it qualifies for five years of OS enhancements. And we're not just talking about run-of-the-mill security patches: a major OS update often means brand-new features, apps, and UI elements.

Over on r/LGOLED, users have reported that LG TVs that predate the 2022 cutoff for the LG Re:New program still receive at least one major webOS overhaul in addition to regular security patches and individual app updates.

LG promises a five-year commitment to webOS and four major updates

LG is one of four TV brands that boast the longest software support, and was only beaten by Samsung's Tizen OS (seven years) and Hisense's VIDAA platform (eight years). Regarding the latter, though, Hisense traditionally uses Google TV, Roku OS, and Fire OS under license on its North American sets; VIDAA is primarily used on Hisense TVs sold in Europe.

At the time of writing, the most recent version of webOS to grace LG TV screens is webOS 26. The most up-to-date OS totally revamped LG's Home Hub platform; it also added a Kids Mode and several AI enhancements. Unfortunately, webOS 26 also removed support for ColourSpace, bscpylgtv, and LG White Balance GUI. If none of those words mean anything to you, proceed as normal; if you used any of those tools to calibrate your LG TV picture, we too are mourning the loss.

Interestingly, LG opted for a 'one-year delay' for the rollout of all major webOS upgrades. According to the manufacturer, this is to ensure that these newer features and interfaces will play nice with older LG hardware. For those who purchased an LG TV in 2026, webOS 27 — the first of your four OS updates — probably won't be available until 2028.
