Amazon's Latest Kindle Lineup Has A Totally New Design — Here's What Changed

The Kindle remains the most successful e-reader ever launched, thanks to affordable pricing, a robust ecosystem, and several useful Kindle-exclusive features. Never one to rest on its laurels, however, Amazon has just redesigned the entire Kindle lineup. These changes are more than just a new color — the new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft arrive with flush-front displays, thinner bodies, and color that wraps around the device instead of stopping at the bezel. Amazon has also changed the display, reordering the layers behind the glass. The brand calls this a first for e-readers, resulting in a display with no raised plastic border around the screen.

There's another smaller change that existing Kindle owners will likely notice straight away. Amazon has moved the power button from the bottom edge of the Kindle to the upper-right side across the new models. This should help to cut down on any accidental presses that happen when you try to stand a Kindle upright or rest it while you're reading, and it's more in line with what many of us have grown to expect from the power button placement on modern smartphones.

Every model in the new Kindle lineup

The 6-inch Kindle is the entry-level model, and it's also the smallest. It comes with 16 GB of storage, up to six weeks of battery life (keep in mind that Kindle batteries may drain faster than Amazon's estimates), and is 30% faster than the previous model. It starts at $149.99 and comes in two colors: Ube (purple) and Graphite. The same 6-inch Kindle is also available with 32 GB of storage and a backplate made from 80% recycled aluminum, retailing for $189.99 in two colors. Both models are available to order now in North America and most of Europe, along with several other markets.

The new Kindle Paperwhite is thinner and lighter; it's also now waterproof and rated for up to 12 weeks of battery life. Amazon switched to using a display layer that drives the pixels to an oxide backplane, which the brand says will give the Paperwhite its highest contrast ratio yet. That means text should look darker against the background. It costs $199.99 and comes with 16 GB of storage. There's also a $249.99 Signature Edition which offers aluminum housing, 32 GB of storage, a front-light that adjusts itself, dock charging, and double-tap page turns. Pre-orders open on a rolling basis in the same regions.

The Kindle Colorsoft also gets an update. There's a reworked light guide to stop stray light from washing out color, which was a problem on previous models. It also uses a thinner coating in the display stack for better clarity. It retails for $289.99 with 16 GB of storage, or $319.99 for the Signature Edition. Kid-friendly versions come with artist-designed covers and a year of Amazon Kids+ from $179.99. Again, pre-orders open on a rolling basis in the same countries.

The new accessories, including a page-turning remote

Alongside these new Kindles, Amazon also announced a range of accessories, and two of them deal with page turning. The Kindle Click is a Bluetooth remote that turns pages on the Kindle for you, aimed at those who regularly read under the covers or on a tray table mid-flight. It costs $34.99 and works with the new Kindles as well as any model from 2024 onward, so current owners aren't left behind.

There's also the Page-Turn Cover, which is a magnetic case with physical buttons built into the edge. It's powered by metal contacts on the back of the device, so you don't need to pair it over Bluetooth or charge it separately. It's only compatible with the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition and costs $79.99. Buttons vanished from the Kindle once the Oasis was retired, and users have been asking for them ever since.

Finally, there's a $59.99 Charging Dock which can hold both Signature Editions upright and charge them through those same metal contacts. Regular covers start at $39.99 in knit fabric, plant-based leather, and pebbled premium leather, with slim magnetic versions for the aluminum models. Owners that aren't upgrading still get the AI and note-taking features added to the Kindle Scribe 3rd Gen and Colorsoft in a free software update.
