How Much Extra Battery Does Wireless Android Auto Drain?

Android Auto usually drains between 8% and 15% of a phone's battery per hour, depending on things such as the device being used, the workload, and how good the phone is at dispersing heat. Heat is largely generated by a device's processors, but it can be compounded by factors such as charging and wireless data transmission, and let's not forget the temperature inside the car itself. These are usually major factors when it comes to battery drain in general, and they certainly don't help while running a power-hungry app like Android Auto.

Android Auto is a known resource chewer, so the natural thing to do would be to keep a phone plugged in for long journeys, right? Well, batteries can warm up while charging too, so it's a good idea to take the steps to reduce the physical workload on a device as much as possible. It's not going to help using a phone for streaming and navigation while having background tasks ticking over.

Our own real-world testing on high-end devices shows the following battery drain data during wireless use:

  • Galaxy S25 Ultra: 14% per hour
  • Galaxy Z Fold 7: 12% per hour
  • Pixel 10 Pro: 16% per hour

These percentages are going to vary greatly based on all of the above when using wireless mode, but they do provide a frame of reference. So what can we do to bring wireless Android Auto drain down?

Wireless Android Auto lowers battery life like any task, but heat is an important factor

It's easy to blame excess battery drain on wireless communication going into overdrive when using Android Auto with cars, and yes, this setup does use battery power like everything else working inside a smartphone would. We're not downplaying this, but heat generated by a phone's workload and the environment inside the car may have a bigger part to play in Android Auto battery drain.

It's no secret that a phone running wireless Android Auto while sitting in a wireless charging mount generates heat, which in turn slows down charging speeds and can impact performance. Unfortunately, unlike the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro, most phones don't come with an attachable cooler. But this does offer a smart way to combat thermal throttling when pushing smartphones through intensive tasks, so why can't the same logic be applied to phones running Android Auto while streaming music in a car?

Moving phones to a shaded, well-ventilated spot, such as in front of an air conditioning vent, will often improve battery retention far more than messing around with app settings. Although there are some best practices to ease battery drain when using Android Auto, which we'll go through next, most electronics throttle their own performance when getting too warm or when they're straight up overheating.

How to stop wireless Android Auto battery drain

Changing some settings and getting into better data and power consumption habits can make a solid difference when using wireless Android Auto. Live data usage is a big one, so download offline maps before traveling. Google Maps lets you save offline maps, and downloading playlists before traveling will also cut down battery drain.

Despite 5G being a thing for years now, coverage can still be patchy. For long trips, try deactivating 5G signals, which will save battery life as smartphones won't be constantly searching for a stronger signal. 4G is fast enough for data use on the road, especially with us downloading everything we need before traveling. If everything is planned out carefully enough, users should be able to use Android Auto without touching their phones.

It doesn't matter if the phone being used is a budget handset or a high-priced flagship — software bugs can destroy battery life. For example, the Google Pixel 10 line of phones had a known issue that caused some users to lose as much as 15% of battery life per hour when plugged in. Google states this has been fixed in a July 2026 update, but some users aren't convinced. Regardless of opinion, it's important to keep handsets updated to curb situations like this.
